- RO028-046001 Church
Description
The parish church of Kilcooley, listed as Kiliculy in the ecclesiastical taxation of Elphin in 1306 (Cal. doc. Ire., vol. 5, 223), and situated on a broad low hill. The S wall of the church is incorporated into the S. wall of the rectangular graveyard (RO028-046002-) (dims 42m E-W; 28m N-S) and the graveyard has been extended to the W (dims c. 80m E-W; 28m N-S). Within the old graveyard the outline of the church (int. dims 26m E-W; 6.3m N-S) can be seen in the spread of the W, N and E walls (Wth 2.5-4m; H 0.1-0.3m). The rounded head of a window (RO028-046005-) (dims 0.22m x 0.2m; T 0.3m) and a grave-marker with a chamfer and rebate for a doorway (H 0.4m) suggest work of the 12th century and the later middle ages. N of the old graveyard is field system (RO028-046003-). Archaeological testing (09E0228) c. 100m W of the old graveyard and church on the other side of the entry lane produced no related material (Purcell 2012). Description
On a broad low hill. Rectangular graveyard (dims 42m E-W; 28m N-S) defined by masonry walls has been extended to the W (dims c. 80m E-W; 28m N-S). The S wall of the church (RO028-046001-) is incorporated in the S wall of the old graveyard. Archaeological testing (09E0228) c. 100m W of the old graveyard and on the other side of the entry lane produced no related archaeological material (Purcell 2012). Description
On a broad low hill N of the church site of Kilcooley (RO028-046001-). North of the graveyard (RO028-046002-) is a rectangular enclosure visible as a grass-covered platform (dims 44m E-W; 23m N-S) defined by scarps (at W: H 0.3m) with a bank (Wth 3-3.5m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.5m-0.8m) on the N and W sides. Immediately to the N of this a SW-NE roadway (RO028-046004-) (Wth 12m) defined by earthen banks (Wth 3.5-4.5m; int. H 0.3-0.8m; ext. Description
On a broad low hill N of the church site of Kilcooley (RO028-046001-). NW of the graveyard (RO028-046002-) is a SW-NE roadway (Wth 12m) defined by earthen banks (Wth 3.5-4.5m; int. H 0.3-0.8m; ext. H 0.2m) extending off to the NE in interrupted sections (L c. 450m). At the W end it connects with the S-N entrance lane to the graveyard and continued SW to meet the N5 road. The rounded head of a window (RO028-046005-) (dims 0.22m x 0.2m; T 0.3m) and a grave-marker with a chamfer and rebate for a doorway (H 0.4m) in the old graveyard (RO028-046002-) suggest two periods of construction at the church of Kilcooley (RO028-046001-). Description
Indicated on the 1837 and 1930 eds of the OS 6-inch map as an enclosure cut by an E-W road. Situated on a broad plateau. An arc (C 22m E-W) of an earthen bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.8m), frequently reduced to a scarp (H 0.6-0.7m) and with slight traces of a fosse (Wth of base 3m) survives NW-NE on the N side of the Strokestown - Tulsk road (N5). A section of the perimeter survives S of the road incorporated into a curving field bank (Wth 1.6m; int. H 1m; ext. H 1.3m) SW-W (diam. c. 39m N-S; c. 36m E-W). Description
On top of a broad hill. Subcircular grass-covered area (dims 29.9m N-S; 24m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2.2-3.5m; int. H 0.2-0.4m; ext. H 0.5-0.7m), with a flat-bottomed fosse (Wth of top 4-6.6m; Wth of base 2.2-3m; D 0.3-0.7m) NE-S-W and an outer bank (Wth 2.2m; ext. H 0.2m) S-NW. There is an entrance (Wth 3.4m) at SE. The monument is overlain by an E-W field bank and outer drain at N, which distorts the perimeter here, and the interior is overlain by a NNE-SSW relict field bank.
