  Description

• RO010-080 Burial ground
  Description

  Described as a graveyard on the 1837, and as a burial ground on the 1914 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a slight N-facing slope in a low-lying landscape. Rectangular area (int. dims 41.5m NW-SE; 27.5m NE-SW) defined by a modern masonry wall which contains 19th and 20th century headstones as well as neat rows of uninscribed grave-markers placed about 1.5m apart at the S end. • RO010-081 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Marked as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 40m) on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a N-facing slope in a low-lying landscape. Described as a rath (D'Alton 1845, 89), it has been removed by a quarry apart from a D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 29m E-W; 9m N-S) defined by a curving scarp (H 0.4-1m) SE-SW. • RO010-085001 Castle - unclassified
  Description

  Knockroe was owned by John Crofton in 1586, but this location is traditionally associated with the Plunkett family (OS Name Books). Owen Mac Conor Og of Aghacarra had 'a handsome dwelling house' at Knockroe in 1635 which was probably at this location (Mac Dermot 1996, 359). Situated on a low knoll overlooking the W end of the S shore Canbo Lough (dims c. 1.3m E-W; c. 100-300m N-S) c. 40m distant, which has shrunk into a W and E lake. The knoll has been levelled to a grass-covered platform (dims 21.5m N-S; 20.3m E-W), which could have supported the castle of which there is no visible surface remains. To the NE are grass-covered foundations (Wth 1.1m) of a small rectangular house (RO010-085002-) (int. dims 4.8m E-W; 4m N-S), and to the ESE a short length (1.5m) of a wall foundation remains.   Description

  At the W end of the S shore of Canbo Lough (dims c. 1.3km E-W; c. 100-300m N-S) that has shrunk into two lakes. Just NE of castle (RO010-085001-) are grass-covered foundations (Wth 1.1m) of a small rectangular building (int. dims 4.8m E-W; 4m N-S), and to the ESE a short length (1.5m) of a wall foundation remains.   On a S-facing slope. A standing stone (dims. c. 0.6m x c. 0.3m; H c. 0.9m) was dislodged from a mound (RO010-087002-) in 1967 when bones were reputedly found (NMI file). • RO010-088 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Towards the top of the S-facing slope of an E-W drumlin ridge. Circular grass and scrub-covered area (diam. 34m) defined by three largely overgrown banks and two fosses. The inner bank (Wth 4.7-5m; int. H 0.3m at SE to 1.2m at NE; ext. H 0.8m at SE to 1.55m at N) W-N-SE is separated by a fosse (Wth of top 5.2-6.7m; Wth of base 4m) from a second bank (Wth 5.5m; int. H 0.75m at SE to 1.45m at N; ext. H 1.4-1.5m) S-N-SE. There is a second fosse (Wth of top 4.7-5m; Wth of base 3.3m) S-N-SE, but a third outer bank (Wth 3.7m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.5m) only survives SSW-W (max. ext. diam. c. 60m). There is no identifiable original entrance, and a NW-SE field bank overlies the monument towards the perimeter at W.   Description

  On a level landscape with a small W-E stream or drain curving around the monument W-S-E c. 50-100m distant. This is a subcircular grass-covered area (dims 33m N-S; 28.4m E-W) defined by a gapped earthen bank (Wth 2.3m at E to 4.6m at S; int. H 0.3-0.55m; ext. H 1.1m at E to 1.4m at S) NW-E-SW reduced to a scarp (H 1.6m) elsewhere, and an outer fosse (Wth 2.5-3m; D 0.2-0.5m) SE-W-NNE. There is no recognizable original entrance.   Description

  On a low terrace in a low-lying landscape with a small W-E stream or drain c. 40m to the N. Circular grass and rush-covered area (diam. 33m N-S) defined by an overgrown earthen bank (Wth 5-6m; int. H 0.3m at S to 0.8m at N; ext. H 2m) N-E-SW, which is reduced to a scarp (H 1.5-1.75m) elsewhere. This is separated by a fosse (Wth of top 5.4-6.3m; Wth of base 2.8m at NE to 3.65m at W) SSE-W-E from an outer bank (Wth 4.8-5m; int. H 0.8-1.45m; ext. H 1.5m) SSE-W-NE, and a second outer fosse (Wth of base 2.5m; D 0.2-0.5m) survives SW-NW. There is no identifiable original entrance.   Marked similarly on the 1837 and 1914 eds. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a narrow terrace overlooking a small W-E stream immediately to the S. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 6.8m) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 1.7m at W to 3.2m at N; int. H 0.2-0.4m; ext. H 0.55-0.8m) with an entrance (Wth 1m) at E.
