- RO027-014001 Hillfort
Description
At the summit of Mewlaghadooey Hill. Subcircular grass-covered area (dims c. 200m E-W; c. 150m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (at W: Wth c. 6m; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.3m) SW-NW and a low scarp (H 0.2m) NW-E. Bowl barrow (RO027-014002-) is inside the perimeter at NW, ring-barrow (RO027-014003-) is on the line of the perimeter at SSE, and ring-barrow (RO027-014004-) is inside the line of the perimeter at SE. The road (RO027-014005-) approaches the perimeter externally at SE. The enclosure is cut by a NE-SW public road W of the bowl barrow, and overlain by NW-SE field banks to NE and SW of this barrow. Description
On a slight N-S ridge at the summit of Mewlaghadooey Hill. Circular, grass-covered flat-topped earthen mound (diam. of base 27m N-S; 25.5m E-W; diam. of top 9.8m N-S; 8.8m E-W; H 3.1m at E to 4m at W) with a slight pit (diam. 5.5m; D 0.2m) on the summit. It is within the hillfort (RO027-014001-), SW of the centre. Given its prominent position and its size, it might contain a passage tomb. Description
At the top of the S-facing slope of Mewlaghadooey Hill, and on the line of the perimeter of hillfort (RO027-014001-) at SE. Circular grass-covered mound (diam. 30m; H 0.6-0.8m) separated by a berm (Wth 5-6.5m) from a slight outer bank (Wth c. 5m; H 0.1m) N-SE. Description
On the broad summit of Mewlaghadooey Hill, on the line of the perimeter of hillfort (RO027-014001-) at E. Circular grass-covered area (int. diam. 9.3m E-W; 8.7m N-S) defined by a slight earthen bank (Wth c. 5-6m; int. H 0.1-0.2m; ext. H 0.3-0.4m). There is no visible entrance. Description
Towards the top of the S-facing slope of Mewlaghadooey Hill, approaching the line of the perimeter of hillfort (RO027-014001-) at S and just W of ring-barrow (RO027-014003-). Two parallel features (max. Wth c. 28m; max. L c. 120m) aligned NNW-SSE, represented by a low earthen bank (Wth 6.4m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.1m) at E and a low scarp (H 0.6m) at W are badly damaged by old quarry pits and tare runcated by a NNE-SSW field bank and townland boundary with Bohagh to the E. Marked faintly as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 45m) bisected by the NNE-SSW townland boundary with Bohagh to the E on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on the SW-facing slope of Mewlaghadooey Hill. Description
On a bluff overlooking a small ravine to the N and at the bottom of the S-facing slope of Mewlaghadooey Hill. Raised circular and grass-covered but dished area (diam. 20.5m NW-SE; 19.5m NE-SW; D 0.8m) defined by a scarp (H 0.9m at SE to 1.4-2m generally). There is no visible fosse, but an entrance ramp (Wth 1.4m) is at SE. The monument is overlain by a NE-SW field wall towards the perimeter at SE. On a shelf towards the bottom of a SW-facing slope overlooking a NW-SE valley. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 33m NW-SE; 31m NE-SW) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4.5-5.5m; int. H 0.2-0.3m; ext. H 1m at SE to 2m at NW). There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance, but a NE-SW field bank overlies the monument towards the perimeter at SE. On the crest of a NW-SE ridge at the S foot of Mewlaghadooey Hill. Subcircular grass-covered area (dims 56m NW-SE; 49m NE-SW) defined by an earthen bank (at SE: Wth 9.3m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.2m; at NW: Wth 14.5m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1.1m). There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance. This may be the correct location of possible rath (RO028-036----), c. 100m to the SE.
