Description
Located on a level area on the SE edge of an expanse of lowlying boggy ground. A roughly circular surface spread (diam. c. 8m) of angular stone fragments in charcoal-rich soil was exposed in the course of topsoil removal by a mechanical digger. Another discrete patch of burnt stone and charcoal (diam. c. 3m) is located 6m to N but this is probably material displaced by the machine. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 28 March, 2013
- SL015-132 Burnt mound
Description
Located in flat, damp lowlying rush-grown pasture, c. 570m N of the NW shoreline of Lough Gill. This burnt mound is evident as a low subcircular rise (15m N−S; 16m E−W; H 0.65m at E, 0.4m at W). The mound is composed of a concentration of angular stone fragments in black soil. It is most clearly defined on the E side, where there is a slight drop in ground level, but elsewhere the mound grades seamlessly into the surrounding field surface. A covering of bright green grass, and an absence of rushes, distinguishes it from the rough, rushy sward of the surrounding field. It is more than likely a fulacht fia, which has been partly levelled in the past; no clearly defined trough depression is visible. There are two burnt mounds (SL015-133----; SL015-134----) in the adjoining field c. 175m to N. Notified to NMS by Leo Leyden. - SL015-133 Burnt mound
Description
Adjacent to a N−S field boundary in the NE corner of a pasture field, located in flat, damp lowlying terrain. Ground rises gently to N. The NE shores of Lough Gill are 580m to S. This partly levelled burnt mound has been bisected by a N−S field ditch (Wth 1.4m; D 0.6-0.8m)/property boundary. The W half of the mound is still evident as a low D-shaped rise (12m N−S; 6.5m E−W; H 0.3m), bordered on its straight side at E by the field ditch. A low field bank (Wth 0.8-1m; H 0.6m at W) borders the W edge of the field ditch, overlying the burnt mound. The field bank is composed of upcast soil from the ditch, and incorporates burnt stone and black soil. A post and wire fence borders the E side of the field ditch. In the field to E of this, the burnt mound has been levelled, but a difference in grass growth suggests that it extends at least 3m to E of the field ditch. There is a burnt mound (SL015-134----) 10m to NNW and another (SL015-133----), in an adjoining field, c. 175m to S. Notified to NMS by Leo Leyden. - SL015-134 Burnt mound
Description
In the NE corner of pasture field, located in flat, damp lowlying terrain. Ground rises gently immediately to N. The NE shores of Lough Gill are c. 600m to S. This burnt mound is evident as a very low, grass-covered roughly circular rise (12m N−S; 12m E−W). It appears to be composed of angular stone fragments in black soil. There is a very slight surface dip towards the SE side of the mound, but it is very poorly defined, and it is unclear whether it indicates the location of a trough. There is a burnt mound (SL015-133----) 10m to SSE and another (SL015-133----), in an adjoining field, c. 190m to S. Notified to NMS by Leo Leyden.
