- SL047-048001 Barrow - ring-barrow
Description
In rough grazing, close to a break of slope at the E end of a ridge. One of a group of four barrows forming a barrow cemetery (see SL047-048002; SL047-048003-; SL047-048004-). A circular area (c. 11m E-W; 11.7m N-S) enclosed by a fosse (Wth c. 3m) which is evident as a broad band of waterlogged ground supporting a dense growth of rushes and irises. A stony external flat-topped bank (Wth 2.4m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.2m) is evident all round. A possible entrance (Wth 1.35m) at ESE is marked by a low section of the bank and a corresponding dry section of the fosse. There is a gap (Wth 3m) in the bank at E. The overall diameter of the barrow is 20m N-S and 19.7m E-W. It is conjoined at W to a bowl-barrow (SL047-048002-). A ditch barrow (SL047-048003-) lies c. 14m to W and another (SL047-04804-) c. 30m to ESE. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). - SL047-048002 Barrow - bowl-barrow
Description
In rough grazing, close to a break of slope at the E end of a ridge. One of a group of four barrows (see SL047-048001-; SL047-048003-; SL047-048004-). A circular round-topped steep-sided mound (9.7m N-S; 9m E-W; H 1.4m) enclosed by two fosses with intervening and external banks. Stones protrude in places from the sod-covered mound. The inner fosse (Wth 2m) is evident as a shallow depression marked by rushes and irises. The intervening bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H 0.35m; ext. H 0.3m) is evident as a broad low rise, difficult to discern NE-E. The external fosse (Wth 2.5m) is evident only as a slight depression marked by irises. The external bank (Wth 2.3m; int. H 0.35m; ext. H 0.25m) is evident S-SW and NW-NNW, but is barely perceptible elsewhere. The external bank and fosse are overlain ENE-ESE by the external bank of the conjoined ring-barrow (SL047-048001-) and the external bank is truncated at W by a field boundary. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Sligo' compiled by Ursula Egan, Elizabeth Byrne, Mary Sleeman with Sheila Ronan and Connie Murphy (Dublin Stationery Office, 2005). Date of upload: 18 January 2008
- SL047-048003 Barrow - ditch barrow
Description
In rough grazing, close to a break of slope at the E end of a ridge. A low circular flat-topped rise (diam. c. 5m; H c. 0.3m), engulfed in rushes. A silted-up fosse (Wth 2m; D 0.2m), noted during a previous site inspection in 1993 (SMR (1989) file), is now possibly masked by a dense growth of rushes. This is one of a group of four barrows (see SL047-048001-; SL047-048002-; SL047-048004-).
- SL047-048004 Barrow - ditch barrow
Description
In rough grazing, close to a break of slope at the E end of a ridge. A circular flat-topped rise (diam. 4.8m; H 0.3m) defined by a low broadly sloping scarp. A band of wet ground (Wth c. 1.5m) outside the scarp S-W probably indicates the remains of a silted-up fosse. This is one of a group of four barrows (see SL047-048001-; SL047-048002-; SL037-048003-).
- SL047-049 Enclosure
Description
In pasture. The cropmark of a small roughly rectangular enclosure, with a possible entrance in the NW side, is visible in an aerial photograph (ACAP, V227, 32-3). It is not visible at ground level.
- SL047-050 Enclosure
Description
In gently undulating pasture. An oval area (int. diam. 48m x 35m) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1.45m). The possible entrance (Wth 2m) is at NW. The interior slopes down to E.
