• KK020-027 House - 17th century
  Description

  According to Bence-Jones (1978, 184), Leyrath, 'Originally a Tobin castle, acquired by the Wheeler family C17'. The Tobin castle being referred to is Rathermore Castle (KK020-032----) which on the Down Survey (1655-6) parish map of Blackrath parish and part of St Martin's parish is depicted in Lyrath townland, though post-17th century boundary changes now place it just over the townland boundary, in Templemartin townland. There may be 17th-century fabric within the early 19th-century Leyrath house which consisted of, 'a simple 2 storey 5 bay pedimented front facing west, with 2 wings running back from it to enclose a small 3 sided office court; the entrance door being on the south side, under a Regency veranda...In the southern wing there are smaller and lower rooms surviving from before the rebuilding' (ibid.).   Description

  In tillage. Identified as a cropmark on an aerial photograph (CUCAP BDI005 and BDI006, 14 July 1970) and interpreted as a possible rectangular enclosure. It is also possible that this is part of a larger co-axial field system running NE-SW. There is another rectilinear cropmark enclosure (KK020-030002-) immediately to the S and a ringfort (KK020-031----) c. 100m to the SW. A curving trackway (KK020-030003-) was also identified as a cropmark, running roughly NE-SW to the NW of the ringfort.   Description

  In tillage. Identified as a cropmark on an aerial photograph (CUCAP BDI005 and BDI006, 14 July 1970) and interpreted as a rectangular enclosure (dims. c. 40m). The cropmark delineating the fosse along the S side is particularly pronounced and there appears to be an entrance on the E side. Another rectilinear enclosure (KK020-030001-) was also identified immediately to the N but this may be part of a larger co-axial field system running NE-SW. There is a ringfort (KK020-031----) c. 40m to the SW. A curving trackway (KK020-030003-) was also identified as a cropmark, running roughly NE-SW to the NW of the ringfort. A sandpit, indicated on the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map is also evident as a cropmark on the aerial photograph immediately W of the enclosure.   Description

A curving trackway (L c. 70m) was identified as a cropmark on an aerial photograph (CUCAP BDI005 and BDI006, 14 July 1970), showing two parallel lines, running roughly NE-SW, c. 40m NW of a ringfort (KK020-031----). Two rectilinear enclosures (KK020-030001-; KK020-030002-) were also identified as cropmarks c. 80m and 40m to the NW respectively. • KK020-031 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Described by Carrigan (1905, vol. 3, 364) as, ‘a circular structure of earth, about 55 yards [c. 50m] across, and well preserved, and occupying the point of a slightly rising ground. Immediately beside it, on the east, stood the castle of Rathardmore’. Doyle (1981) noted that, ‘Part of one side seems to have been removed and inner bank built in place of what was taken away. Like many other raths the banks on one side are more substantial, and the surround trench much deeper than on the other sides. The entrance is facing north east, but there may have been another entrance in the missing portion. There was a pond near the rath’. The castle (KK020-0032----) is located c. 95m to the E. On the 1st (1839) ed. OS 6-inch map the ringfort is located at the SE edge of Lyrath demesne and an avenue (L. c. 80m) is depicted running NE-SW from the townland boundary to the E to the E side of the ringfort, probably a landscape feature. Two rectilinear enclosures (KK020-030001-; KK020-030002-) and a trackway (KK020-030003-) have been identified as cropmark immediately NW of the ringfort.   Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey country house, built 1863-6, on an F-shaped plan centred on single-bay two-storey pedimented breakfront; three-bay (north) or single-bay (south) two-storey side elevations. Occupied, 1901; 1911. Sold, 1993. Now disused. Hipped slate roof on an F-shaped plan centred on pitched (gabled) slate roof (breakfront), roll moulded clay ridge tiles, paired rendered central chimney stacks having cornice capping on ogee consoles on stringcourses supporting terracotta or yellow terracotta pots, and cast-iron rainwater goods on timber eaves boards on box eaves having paired timber consoles on moulded rendered stringcourse. Part creeper-covered rendered, ruled and lined walls on lichen-spotted moulded cushion course on rendered, ruled and lined plinth with rendered quoined piers to corners including rendered quoined piers to corners (breakfront) supporting open bed pediment on paired timber consoles on moulded rendered stringcourse. Segmental-headed central door opening with two bull nose-detailed cut-granite steps, moulded archivolt centred on keystone framing timber panelled double doors having overlight. Round-headed flanking window openings with moulded archivolts centred on keystones framing one-over-one timber sash windows. "Venetian Window" (first floor) with cut-limestone engaged columns on balustraded false balconette supporting ogee-detailed segmental pediment on panelled frieze on entablature framing one-over-one timber sash window having one-over-one sidelights. Segmental-headed flanking window openings with cut-granite sills on fluted scroll consoles, and moulded archivolts centred on keystones framing one-over-one timber sash windows. Paired round-headed (north) or round-headed (south) window openings with moulded archivolts centred on keystones framing one-over-one timber sash windows. Segmental-headed window openings (first floor) with cut-granite sills on fluted scroll consoles, and moulded archivolts centred on keystones framing one-over-one timber sash windows.
