In improved rolling pasture, located on rise. This rath is shown on the 1838 and 1930 OS 6-inch maps as a circular embanked enclosure (diam. c. 25m). It has been levelled; there is no visible surface trace at ground level. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 1 April 2020
- MA039-079 Ringfort - rath
Description
In pasture, located on a low ridge. Raised circular area or platform (34.5m N–S; 32.7m E–W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 5-6m; int. H 0.3-0.5m; ext. H 1.75m, 3.4m at SE) with a pronounced external slope, which drops into a fosse (Wth 3.5-4m) with an external bank (Wth 4-5.5m; int. H 0.8-1.3m; 1-1.2m). There is a gap (Wth 2m) in the bank at E, roughly faced with stones on the S terminal. It may be an original entrance; there is a corresponding low area in the outer bank. There is another break (Wth c. 2m) in the bank at N. Loose stone is evident scattered in the fosse and along the top of the outer bank. A field fence, on a N−S axis, cuts across the rath, slightly to E of centre. The perimeter is densely ringed with hawthorn, blackthorn and brambles, which also encroach on the interior. There is an old quarry pit (diam. c. 12m) just outside the outer bank at NE, and another small depression/ area of disturbance (7m N–W; 5m E–W) abutting the outer bank at SW. Shown on the 1838 and 1930 OS 6-inch maps as a roughly circular embanked enclosure (diam. c. 25-30m), bordered at W by a N–S field boundary, which coincides with the townland boundary. It has been levelled; there is no visible surface trace at ground level. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 1 April 2020
- MA039-103001 Ringfort - rath
Description
In a grove of beech trees, located on a rise in an area of rolling pastureland, part of the Mount Falcon demesne. This is shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map an unnamed, circular embanked enclosure; by the time of the 1930 edition it is shown as a circular enclosure, named ‘Rathmorrow’, and is indicated as ‘Grave Yard (Private)’ (MA039-103002-). Roughly circular area (int. diam. 20m N−S; 24m E−W) enclosed by a substantial earthen bank (Wth 5-6.5m). The bank has a broadly sloping internal face (int. H 1.2m). Its exterior face is cut to the vertical, and faced with a mortared stone wall (H 1.3-1.4) which rises to the full height of the bank, and encircles its entire circuit. There is a break (Wth 2.5-3m) in the bank at E, perhaps an original entrance. It is blocked now on it outer edge by the encircling stone wall, but a stile built into the wall allows access to the interior. Immediately outside the enclosure at S–NW is a flat space (Wth 3.5-4m, 2m at NW) bordered on its outer edge by a low rise (Wth 2.4; int. H 0.1m; ext. H 0.35m). In the level interior of the enclosure there are rows of 19th- and 20th-centuries headstones. This enclosure is probably the remains of a rath, the interior and enclosing bank of which were remodelled in the mid-late 19th-century to convert it into a burial ground. Two yew trees grow in the interior, as well as a few hawthorn and sycamore trees. Sycamore trees ring the bank. There is a court tomb (MA039-104----) 15m to N. Description
In improved pasture, located on elevated ground, with a gentle slope down to NE–E. Shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map as a small embanked enclosure (diam. c. 10-15m); not shown on later map editions. There are scant remains: a circular area (13.3m N–S; 11.3m E–W) defined by a slight bank (Wth 2.5m; int. H 0.3-0.4m; ext. H 0.2m). Stones protrude from the top of the bank on the NW arc, and there is a tree stump in the bank at N. The interior appears slightly sunken, but a slight central rise is discernible off centre to N. Possibly the remains of a barrow. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 1 April 2020
