• MA038-086 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, close to the boundary on the NW end of the townland, located on a rise, with a natural depression of wettish ground intervening at S–SW between it and another rise, 90m to S, on which an enclosure (MA038-087----) is located. Circular area (23m E–W; 23.8m N–S) defined by the remnants of a bank. The bank is evident on the W half as a low rise (Wth 3.8m; int. H 0.45m; ext. H 0.6m, at NNW) of earth and stone, quite dilapidated and broadly slumped; on the E half it has been largely levelled, surviving only as a slight scarp, clipped on its outer edge at NE–ESE by a later field fence. In the NW quadrant of the interior, there is a linear depression or trench (L 7.6m; Wth 2.3m; D 0.45-0.6m) on a NNE–SSW axis. At its SSW end, close to the inner face of the bank, it takes a right-angled turn and continues to SSE for 8.5m, then turns sharply again, possibly continuing for c. 4m to the E but this section is less clearly defined. • MA038-087 Enclosure
  Description

  In pasture, located on a rise with a fall of ground to N–NW, and good views of the surrounding landscape. Shown on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 20m). This enclosure has been levelled; a slight circular undulation (diam. 12m N–S; 14m E–W) can be discerned. There is a rath (MA038-086----) 90m to N, and another rath (MA038-088----) c. 160m to SE. • MA038-088 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, in the NE corner of a modern rectangular field, located on the E side of a low rise in undulating terrain. Slightly raised, broadly oval area (35.5m E–W; 40.4m N–S) defined by a bank. The bank (Wth 4.2m at SE, 4.6m at NW; int. H 0.6m at SE, 1.2m at NW; ext. H 1.5m at SE, 1.55m at NW) has an earthen scarp on its external face, but the body of the bank appears to be composed of earth and stones. There is a gap (Wth 2m) in the bank at E, which may be original entrance. Stones are visible protruding from the N terminal, but it is unclear if these represent an original stone facing. Immediately inside the bank, mirroring its circuit, there is a contiguous, partly sod-covered stone bank (Wth 3-4m; H 0.5m). It consists of heaps of loose stone pushed against the inner face of the earthen rath bank. This is an unusual feature, of uncertain significance –it seems likely to be the result of field clearance activity in the relatively recent past. The interior has an uneven surface, and slight linear N–S undulations are discernible, possibly the remnants of cultivation ridges. In the centre, there are three heaps (max. dim. c. 6m; H 0.6m) of loose stones. There is a mound (MA038-149---) 40m to N, and an enclosure (MA038-087----) c. 160m to NW. • MA038-149 Mound
  Description

  In average pasture, in a thicket of blackthorn and brambles, located on the E side of a low rise. This mound is not indicated on the 1838 and 1922 OS 6-inch maps. It consists of a raised sub-circular concentration (12m E-W; 10m N-S, H c. 0.8m) of earth and stone, broadly slumped on the E side. There is a slight hollow or concave area at W. The top (diam. c. 7-8m) is covered with loose boulders amidst clusters of smaller stones that appear to be the result of field clearance. A rath (MA038-088) is located 40m to S.
