• RO016-132 Enclosure - large enclosure
  Description

  Marked as a D-shaped enclosure (dims. c. 80m E-W; c. 50m N-S) truncated at N by an E-W field bank and townland boundary with Ardnagowna on the 1837 and 1914 eds of the OS 6-inch map, and situated on a slight E-facing slope. Described as a semicircular area (diam. 77m E-W) defined by a gapped earthen bank E-S-W and an E-W field wall at N, with a causeway entrance (Wth 2m) at E (Gannon 1972). It is not now visible at ground level in pasture, although a fosse is visible on OSI images (2005). Rath (RO016-133----) is c. 200m to the SW.   Description

  On a SW-facing slope. Subcircular grass-covered but poached area (dims 37m N-S; 31m E-W) defined by a scrub-covered earthen bank (Wth 2.7m; int. H 0.2-0.55m; ext. H 0.3-1.1m) at SW and WNW-ESE which is reduced to a scarp (H 0.25m at W to 1m at S) elsewhere, and an outer fosse (Wth of base 1.5m at NE to 3m at W; D 0.15-0.4m) W-N-SE.   Description

  On a rise on the W-facing slope of a drumlin. Oval grass-covered platform (dims 32.8m E-W; 27m N-S) defined by a scarp (H 0.5m at S to 1.6m at W), with an outer fosse (Wth of base 3.7m at W to 5m at N; D 0.15-0.3m) N-E and SW-WNW.   Description

  At the bottom of a S-facing slope, above the flat valley (Wth c. 100m) of the NE-SW Owenur River which had a ford (RO017-152----) here and c. 50m from the stream. Square grass-covered area (dims 29.7m N-S; 29.4m E-W) defined by slight earthen banks (Wth 6-6.5m; int. H 0.1-0.2m; ext. H 0.3-0.4m) at N and S, and slight fosses or moats (Wth of top 4.5-6m; D 0.1-0.3m) on all sides, but that at N is almost completely removed. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010

  Description

  On a rise on a NE-facing slope. Subcircular grass-covered area (dims 28.5m N-S; 24m E-W) defined by an earthen bank with some bushes (Wth 5m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.2-1.5m) NE-SE and at W, and elsewhere by a scarp (H 0.9m at S to 1.75m at N). There is a stone-lined entrance (Wth. 3.3m) at E, but there is no visible fosse.
