- RO029-019 Ringfort - rath
Description
At the W end of a short WNW-ESE drumlin ridge. Subcircular grass-covered area (dims 47m N-S; 42m E-W) with a few mature deciduous trees on the perimeter at NW defined by a fosse (Wth of top 3.3-4.4m; Wth of base 2m; int. D 0.6-1m; ext. D 0.4-0.9m6). There are traces of an inner bank (H 0.9m) at NW which is cut by a farm shed built in the fosse. There is no identifiable original entrance. Gannon (1972) records slight traces of an inner bank and an outer bank which have now been removed. Rath (RO029-020----) is outside the perimeter at ESE, rath (RO029-021----) is c. 140m to the ESE, and raths (RO029-018001-; RO029-018002-) are c. 190m to the SW. Description
On the crest of a low WNW-ESE drumlin ridge. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 40m N-S; 39m E-W) with a few deciduous trees defined by an earthen bank (Wth c. 3m; int. H c. 0.5m) and re-cut fosse (Wth 1.5m; D 1.8m) SSW-N, and by a fosse (Wth of top 4.9m; Wth of base int. D 0.6m; ext. D 0.4m) N-SSE. An E-W farm track is built over the fosse at S. Gannon (1972) records an entrance at E which is no longer visible. Rath (RO029-019----) is 10m to the W, rath (RO029-021----) is c. 80m to the ESE, and raths (RO028-018001-; RO028-018002-) are c. 220m and 210m to the SW respectively. Description
At the E end of a low WNW-ESE drumlin ridge. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 40m NW-SE) with a few mature deciduous trees on the perimeter defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4.2m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.6m) WNW-NNW and by a low scarp or fosse (at SE: Wth of top 5.6m; int. D 0.9m; ext. D 1.1m) WNW-E-SSW, but the perimeter cannot be traced SSW-WNW. There is no identifiable original entrance, but Gannon (1972) records a complete bank and an entrance at SE when the site was overgrown and the perimeter formed the townland boundary with Farnbeg NW-NE. Rath (RO029-020----) is c. 80m to the WNW, rath (RO028-022----) is c. 140m to the NE, and rath (RO028-069----) is c. 180m to the SSE. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
- RO029-024001 Mausoleum
Description
On a level landscape c. 220m SSW of Strokestown House (RO029-025002*) and within the demesne. This was built by Nicholas Mahon c. 1667 (Hayward 1955, 204). It is a rectangular structure (ext. dims 13.4m E-W; 7.95m N-S) constructed of masonry walls which are almost complete (H 2.7m; T 0.8m) and have roughly dressed quoins. There is an inserted twin-light pointed window (H 2.3m; Wth 0.9m) with chamfered surrounds in the E gable. The locked door, flanked by two plain shields, is at the W end of the S wall, and the interior contains a large hexagonal tomb or mausoleum, and a wall memorial (RO029-024002-) against the N end of the E wall. This is the tomb of Nicholas Mahon and his wife Magdalene (nee French) who died in 1680 and 1683 respectively, according to the inscription. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 8 December 2011

Description
On a level landscape c. 220m SSW of Strokestown House (RO029-025002*) and within the mausoleum (RO028-024001-), against the N end of the E wall. The wall monument of Nicholas Mahon and his wife Magdalene (nee French) who died in 1680 and 1683 respectively according to the inscription, is a shallow altar surmounted by three pilasters and entablature. The inscription reads: UNDER THIS MONUMENT / LIE THE BONES OF CAPTAIN / NICHOLAS MAHON OF STR / OKESTOWN WHO DYED THE 10th / OF OCTOBER 1680 IN THE 60th / YEAR OF HIS AGE AND OF HIS / DEARLY BELOVED WIFE MAE /GDALENE MAHON ALIS FRE- / NCH WHO DYED THE 13th OF M- / ARCH 1683 N THE 56th YEAR / OF HER AGE IN WHOSE ME- / MORIES THEIR ELDEST SON JO / HN MAHON OF STROKEST- / OWN ESQ: CAUSED THIS M / ONUMENT TO BE ERRECTED. Description
Single-arch masonry road bridge, built c.1820, over stream, within the grounds of Strokestown Park. Random coursed limestone walls with cut stone voussoirs to segmental arch-ring and tooled moulded stone coping. Wrought-iron railings and limestone bollards added to form parapet.
