  Description

  On a rise in a level landscape. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 28.5m N-S; 26.8m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 5.1-6m; int. H 0.05-0.25m; ext. H 0.9-1.05m) which is reduced to a scarp (H 0.8m) ENE-SSE. There is a fosse (Wth of top 5.2m; Wth of base 1.4m; D 0.35m) SE-W-NW, except SSE-WSW where it is obscured by spoil. • RO044-013001 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  On a low-lying area of limestone karst with low hills to the NE and SE, and a turlough to the NW. Gluain Phadraig is listed in a 15th century document (O'Donovan 1843, 83). There is a modern five-sided well (RO044-013001-) (int. dims 1m N-S; 1m E-W; D 0.7m) with a masonry revetting wall (T 0.5m) which is flush with the external ground surface and approached by one step from the SE, but the original well may be the pond (diam. c. 15m) c. 30m to the NW. About 30m to the E of the pond is Gluain Phadraig, a bullaun basin (RO044-013002-) (diam. 0.23m; D 0.3m) in the limestone bedrock which is surrounded by a penitential cairn (RO044-013004-) (dims 6.2m N-S; 3.4m E-W) retained by drystone walling (H 0.2-0.8m) and open to the W. On the cairn overlooking the bullaun is the damaged head of a latin cross (RO044-013003-) (Wth 0.33m; H 0.23m; T 0.14m). The pond and cairn are within a rectangular enclosure (dims 55m E-W; 52m N-S) which was built in the 1920s and is defined by a drystone wall and hedge. The W boundary was replaced by a masonry wall in 1996 when the well was revamped and an altar built 5m S of the cairn. A pattern was held on the last Sunday in July until the 1960s at least, which suggests that it had a Lughnasa connection. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010

  Description

  Marked only on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map as a D-shaped enclosure (dims c. 55m NW-SE; c. 45m NE-SW), and situated on the crest of the SW-facing slope of a NW-SE limestone ridge.   Description

  On the SW-facing slope of a NW-SE limestone ridge. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 43.3m E-W; 42.1m N-S) defined by a flat-topped earthen bank (Wth of base 4.4-5.8m; Wth of top 1.8m; int. H 0.45-0.8m; ext. H 1.2-2m) with some bushes, which is reduced to a scarp (H 0.5m) SSE-SW. There is no visible fosse but the entrance (Wth 2m) is at S and there are lazy-beds aligned NNE-SSW in the interior. Rath (RO044-016----) is c. 70m to the ESE, and the possible rath (RO044-014----) is c. 80m to the WNW. See the attached aerial image taken from the NE. • RO044-016 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On the SW-facing slope of a NW-SE ridge. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 32.2m NE-SW; 32m NW-SE) defined by a gapped earthen bank with some bushes (Wth 3.5-4.8m; int. H 0.45-0.8m; ext. H 1.1-1.3m). There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance but the perimeter is truncated slightly at W by a NNE-SSW field wall. Rath (RO044-015----) is c. 70m to the WNW.
