- RO021-042030 Ringfort - rath
Description
On a rise at the crest of a WNW-ESE ridge. Oval grass-covered area (dims 45.5m N-S; 37m E-W) defined by scarps (H 0.8m at E to 2.4m at W) with a slight bank (Wth c. 2m; max. int. H 0.5m) on the perimeter NW-NE. The ramp entrance (Wth 3m) is at S, but there is no visible fosse. There are two grass-covered quarry pits in the interior and it is surrounded by straight field banks at S, W and N. The pitfield (RO021-042028-) and field system (RO021-042046-) are just to the NW, on the other side of an E-W public road. See the attached view from the E. Description
Towards the bottom of a N-facing slope overlooking a W-E stream c. 50m to the N. Oval grass-covered area (dims 34.9m N-S; c. 26m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (at S: Wth 3m; int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.2m) S-W-NE, and a fosse (Wth of top 3.2-5.2m; Wth of base 1-1.7m; D 0.2-0.3m) SE-W-NE, but the perimeter merges into the slope NE-SE. There is no visible entrance. Description
Visible as a circular feature on aerial photographs (ACAP: V206/6, 7), and situated towards the bottom of the E-facing slope of Carnakit ridge. Subcircular grass-covered area (dims. 51.5m E-W; 46m N-S) defined by a scarp (H 0.1-0.2m generally to 1m at S). There is no visible fosse or entrance.
