• RO021-042037 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Visible on aerial photograph (OS: 2/4209), and situated towards the bottom of the N-facing slope of a WNW-ESE ridge. Circular grass and rush-covered area (diam. 42m N-S; 41.6m E-W) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.4-4.2m; int. H 0.3-0.7m; ext. H 0.8-1m) E-SW which is reduced to a scarp (H 0.7-0.9m) elsewhere, and a flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 1.5-2m; D 0.2m) which is slightly truncated by a NNE-SSW field drain at W. The entrance (Wth 2.6m) and causeway (Wth 3m) are at ENE. There is a slight grass-covered mound (RO021-042048-) (diam. 9m; H 0.3m) at the centre, which may be spoil from a NNE-SSW drain just to its E. • RO021-042038 Pitfield
  Description

  On the gentle N-facing slope of a WNW-ESE ridge. An area of c. 5 ha (c. 12 acres) contains pits visible on aerial photograph (ACAP: V206/7). • RO021-042039 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On a gentle N-facing slope of a WNW-ESE ridge. Circular grass and rush-covered area (diam. 31.7m E-W; 31.2m N-S) defined by a slight grass-covered earthen bank (Wth 3-3.6m; int. H 0.1-0.2m; ext. H 0.7-1.1m) and a flat-bottomed, reed-filled fosse (Wth of base 1.8-3.4m; D 0.1m generally to 0.4m at S) N-WSW, with a scarp (H 0.7-0.8m) elsewhere. The entrance (Wth 2.4m) and stony causeway (Wth 2.8m) are at SE. Souterrain (RO021-042040-) is inside the perimeter at SW. (Herity 1987a, 126, 138) See attached image from SE taken c. 1998. • RO021-042040 Souterrain
  Description

  The souterrain was always accessible inside the bank of rath (RO021-042039-) at SW. It consists of a lintelled chamber entered at NE with an air-vent (Wth 0.35m; H 0.26m; L 1.05m) in the back wall which emerges on the bank of the rath. The full extent of the souterrain was exposed (11E0330) and recorded by Niall Brady, for which see: Excavations.ie (2011:530). It consists of an entrance passage (L 4.8m), a creep (L 1.6m), and a lintelled chamber (L 4.8m; Wth 1.1m; H 1.15m) with an air-vent in the end-wall that emerges on the outer face of the rath bank. Five narrow steps lead down to the floor of the unroofed entrance passage (D 1.6m). See the attached image taken c. 1998 looking towards the creep.   Description

• RO027-022 Hilltop enclosure
  Description

  Visible as a circular feature on aerial photographs (GSIAP: M 82-3) and situated at the E end of a NW-SE ridge. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 94m NNE-SSW; 93.6m WNW-ESE) defined by a fosse (Wth of top 10m; Wth of base 3m; int. D 0.6m; ext. D 0.5m) E-ESE and (Wth of top 6.6m; int. D 0.5m; ext. D 0.3m) W-WNW, which is reduced to a scarp (H 0.2-0.4m) elsewhere. It is bisected by a WNW-ESE field wall and townland boundary with Castleruby to the S from which a NNE-SSW field bank (Wth 2.7m; H 0.9m) with slight silted drains runs N. The possible road (RO027-068----) may run over its S extent. Archaeological testing (03E0072) c. 100m to the SE (Read 2006i) and further testing (05E0345) c. 150m to the NW (Henry 2008f) failed to produce any related material.
