  Towards the SW edge of the N-S karst ridge of Skrine Hill. Circular grass-covered cairn (diam. 13m E-W; H 0.4m) with a rectangular cist (RO041-062002-) (dims 3m N-W; 2.2m N-S) at the centre. This is defined by low stones (dims 0.5-1.45m x 0.1-0.2m; H 0.2m-0.5m) with some gaps. A whitethorn tree has split a lintel, but there are no other lintels present. Cairn (RO041-063001-) is c. 50m to the NE. Archaeological testing (08E0700) c. 150m to the NW failed to produce any related material (Delaney 2011b).   Towards the bottom of the E-facing slope of Skrine Hill. Oval grass and scrub-covered are (dims 35.6m NW-SE; 22.5m NE-SW) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.5-5.6m; int. H 0.5-0.6m; ext. H 0.3-0.5m) SW-N, a drystone field wall and hedge N-SE and a field wall and hedge S-SW. There is no visible fosse or identifiable original entrance.   Towards the bottom of a gentle S-facing slope. Circular overgrown area (diam. c. 35m) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth 4.5m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1.5m) separated by a fosse (Wth of base 2m; D 1.3m) from an outer bank (Wth 1m; ext. H 0.3m), with an entrance at ENE.   Description

  On a S-facing slope of Skrine Hill. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 41.8m N-S) defined by an earthen bank with some bushes (Wth 2.8-4.5m; int. H 0.05-0.35m; ext. H 0.65-1.1m) separated by a fosse (Wth of top 5.8-6.9m; Wth of base 2.1-2.4m; D 0.45-1m) from an outer bank (Wth 3.2-5.4m; ext. H 0.45-1.25m). The inner bank is quarried E-SE and there is a causeway (Wth 2.5m) at SE (max. ext. diam. 61.3m E-W; 57.6m N-S). The foundations of a house (RO041-083002-) (int. dims 6.8m E-W; 3m N-S) defined by an earth and stone wall (Wth 0.8-1.1m; H 0.1-0.4m) and with an entrance (Wth 0.9m) towards the W end of the S wall are just E of the centre.   On a S-facing slope of Skreen Hill. Circular grass-covered area (diam. 40.6m E-W; 37.8m N-S) defined by an earthen bank with some bushes (Wth 2.7-5m; int. H 0.05-0.5m; ext. H 0.55-1.55m) separated by a rounded fosse (Wth of top 5.3-7.8m; Wth of base 2-3.4m; ext. D 0.8-1.2m) from an outer bank (Wth 2-3.4m; ext. H 0.15-0.55m). There is a causeway (Wth 4.9m) at SSE (max. ext. diam. 56.4m E-W; 52.4m N-S). Souterrain (RO041-084002-) is in the interior, extending from the centre to the perimeter at NW.   Description

  Towards the bottom of a NW-facing slope. Described in 1982 as an oval area (dims. 41.5m NE-SW; 24.5m NW-SE) defined by the remains of a bank (Wth 2m; int. H 0.4-0.8m; ext. H 0.4-0.9m) incorporated into a field bank at E and with slight traces of a fosse (Wth 2m; D 0.2m) at N (SMR file). It is truncated at SW by a NW-SE field wall (L 15.5m).   On a gentle NW-facing slope on a plateau. Oval area (dims 42.6m E-W; 32.9m N-S) defined by a grass-covered stone spread (Wth 2.1-4.3m; H 0.1-0.2m) with traces of inner and outer facing- stones (original Wth 1.9-2m) at NW. The perimeter is overlain by a field wall NW-E-SSE. There is a hut-site (RO041-088002-) (diam. c. 7m) defined by an arc of a stone spread inside the perimeter at N, and a relict field bank is attached to the perimeter at S.   Description

  At the crest of the NW-facing slope of a hill. Known locally to have been an O'Kelly castle, there are no historical references except that in 1641 136 acres there were owned by William Roe Mc Rory Kelly and John Mc Colla Kelly (Simington 1949, 120). Rectangular grass-covered mound (dims 24m NE-SW; 23.5m NW-SE; max. H 2m) of earth and stone with numerous quarry holes, but no wall faces can be seen. • RO042-142 Church
  Description

  Skrine is an ecclesiastical name, and the church there was said to have been dedicated to St Thomas according to John O'Donovan writing c. 1837, although he doubted this dedication (O'Flanagan 1931, vol. 1, 14). A church is marked on the Strafford map of c. 1636 at Church Quarter near Moydow (Simington 1949, Athlone (415)), but there are no other references to a church at Skrine. Situated on the SW-facing slope of a SE-NW valley in a karst landscape. This is a rectangular structure (ext. dims 11.9m WNW-ESE; 7.7m NNE-SSW; int. dims 10.5m WNW-ESE; 5.9m NNE-SSW) defined by a double-faced stone wall (Wth 0.7m) which survives best at ESE (max. ext. H 1.6m) and NNE (max. int. H 0.4m), but which can hardly be traced on the other sides. No doorway or other architectural features are recognisable, and no dressed stonework is visible. The church is within a rectangular enclosure (RO042-142001-) (dims 31m NE-SW; 30.7m NW-SE) defined by a grass-covered earth and stone bank at W (Wth 2.5; H 0.5-0.6m) and N (Wth 3.1m; ext. H 0.4-0.7m; int. H 0.8-1m), but the perimeter at SW has been completely removed and almost completely removed at SE. There is a modern entrance (Wth 2.9m) in the centre of the perimeter at NW and a gap (Wth 2m) at the NW end of the NE bank and at its centre (Wth 1.6m). When the perimeter at SE was removed a small slight rectangular enclosure (dims c. 20m NE-SW; c. 10m E-W) defined by a slight bank or scarp (max. H 0.4m) was created outside the perimeter. The interior of the church and the part of the enclosure to the NE of the church was utilised as a children's burial ground (RO042-142002-). It is a trapezoidal area (dims 10-20m NW-SE; 17m NE-SW) occupied by stone grave-markers (dims c. 0.3m x 0.4m x 0.5m), many upright or tilted, but most are laid flat. A quarry face (RO042-142003-) (L c. 30m; H 0.5m), from which the stones for the church were probably derived, is beyond the perimeter at SW and is generally aligned N-S. A modern quarried area (dims 23m x 23m) just to the E of the enclosure may be where an early bronze hand bell (Higgins 2006) was found. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010

The church (RO042-142----) is within a rectangular enclosure (dims 31m NE-SW; 30.7m NW-SE) defined by a grass-covered earth and stone bank at W (Wth 2.5; H 0.5-0.6m) and N (Wth 3.1m; ext. H 0.4-0.7m; int. H 0.8-1m), but the perimeter at SW has been completely removed and almost completely removed at SE. There is a modern entrance (Wth 2.9m) in the centre of the perimeter at NW and a gap (Wth 2m) at the NW end of the NE bank and at its centre (Wth 1.6m).   Description

  On a SW-facing slope of a plateau. Subcircular scrub-covered area (dims 43.7m N-S; 40.7m E-W) defined by an overgrown earth and stone bank (Wth 4-7m; int. H 0.25m S-W (downslope) to 0.8m generally; ext. H 0.5m at E to 1.5m generally) separated by a rounded fosse (Wth of top 5.7-7m; Wth of base 1.1-2.6m; D 0.4-0.9m) from an outer bank (Wth 3.5-4m; ext. H 0.25-0.55m) which survives ESE-W-NNW. There is an entrance through the inner (Wth 2.7) and outer (Wth 3m) banks and a causeway (Wth 5.5m) at S. An old field bank (Wth 2.3m; H 0.25m; L 23m) abuts the outer bank at NNW (max. ext. dims 58m N-S; 55m E-W). Cashel (RO041-088001-) is c. 160m to the NNW.
