• SL033-040 Enclosure
  Description

  In pasture, on a break in a NW-facing slope, just above a steep fall (H c. 6m) of ground at NW and N. A slightly raised roughly circular area (14m N-S; 13m E-W) defined by an earth and stone bank (int. H 0.45m; ext. H 1.25m) NW-W. The bank survives best E-W. A low mound (diam. 6m) is located on top of the bank at E. The interior is undulating with scatters of moss-covered rocks protruding from the ground. The N half of the interior is raised c. 0.4m above the S half, the interface defined by an erratic and uneven E-W break of slope. • SL033-041 Cairn - unclassified
  Description

  In pasture, on top of a ridge with excellent views in all directions. A roughly circular cairn (18m N-S; 20.6m E-W; max. H 1.40m) of grass-covered limestone stones. The cairn has been extensively disturbed at the centre and in the NW quadrant giving it an irregular appearance. Traces of a 'probable fosse' were noted along the N edge during a previous inspection (pers. comm. M. Keane and J. Farrelly). A large split slab (3.2m x 1.65m; T 0.65m) of weathered limestone lies flat near the NE edge. This stone is known locally as the 'Split Dolmen' or the 'Giant's Grave'. A second smaller slab (0.75m x 0.8m; T 0.2m) protrudes at an angle of c. 45 degrees from the cairn material to E of centre. • SL033-053 Moated site
  Description

  In undulating pasture, on a N-facing slope and within a field system (SL033-070----). A rectangular area (11.5m N-S; 16m E-W) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 3m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.4m) with an external fosse (Wth 3m). A possible entrance (Wth 2m) is on the W side. There is a quarry to S. This is the only moated site which lies within the substantial holdings in South Sligo belonging to the Cistercian Abbey at Boyle in Co. Roscommon (Carville 2002, 348-9 and 328-9) and therefore it could possibly be a moated grange belonging to the abbey. • SL033-054 Enclosure
  Description

  In undulating rocky pasture on a slight WSW-facing slope and within a field system (SL033-070----). The enclosure lies above a sharp fall of ground on its N side and abuts a natural cliff (H 2.5-3.5m) to S. A slightly raised pentagonal area (38m N-S; 35m E-W) defined by an earth and stone bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.5m) SW-NNE. The bank (int. H 0.5m; ext. H 3.8m including the height of the natural slope) lies on the crest of a natural break of slope NW-N. A low earth and stone field boundary lies on the approximate line of the enclosure bank NNE-SE. From SE-SW, the limit of the enclosure is defined by an E-W orientated natural cliff which rises 2.5-3.5m above the interior. From SW-NW the bank consists of large limestone rocks (c. 0.5m x 0.5m x 0.3m) spaced 2-4m apart with earth and stone in between. These large rocks are not visible NW-NNE where the bank is purely of earth and stone. The interior is under grass, clear of overgrowth, slopes gently down to WSW and the W portion is slightly raised to compensate for the hillslope. • SL033-055 Hut site
  Description

  In rocky pasture, on a gentle S-facing slope 4m to the S of a cliff-face (H 2m). A circular area (4m N-S; 4.1m E-W) defined by an earth and stone bank (int. H 0.4m; ext. H 0.25m). The bank consists of rubble limestone covered by earth and moss and is best preserved on either side of the entrance where it is contained within two parallel rows of upright limestone slabs. These slabs also survive sporadically along the inner face of the bank, especially along the S arc. The bank is eroded and lower WSW-N. The entrance (Wth 0.85m) is at ENE and is lined with vertical limestone slabs. The interior is level and clear of overgrowth and is raised at S to compensate for the underlying natural slope and is slightly lower than the external ground level at N. • SL033-056 Cliff-edge fort
  Description

  In rocky undulating pasture on a slight S-facing slope and incorporating a natural semicircular cliff-edge on its N side. A roughly circular area (16m N-S; 15m E-W) defined by an earth and stone bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.9m) E-WSW and by a natural curving cliff-edge (H 8-10m at N) WSW-E. Immediately outside the base of the bank E-WSW is a discontinuous line of upright limestone blocks and slabs (average dims. H 0.75m; Wth 0.55m; T 0.55m). These could be the remains of low stone walling or a revetment for the bank. The entrance is at S with a stony ramp to exterior. The width of the ramp (max. Wth 5m; min. Wth 2m) decreases as it rises into the interior. The interior is undulating and clear of overgrowth and is slightly raised on the S side to compensate for the hillslope. The cliff-edge fort lies within a field system (SL033-070----). An enclosure (SL033-057----) lies c. 50m to S. • SL033-057 Enclosure
  Description

  In undulating rocky pasture, on the E side of a cliff and within a field system (SL033-070----). A slightly raised roughly pentagonal area (18m N-S; 14m E-W) defined by an earth and stone bank (int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.4m) on the N, E and S sides. A vertical cliff (H 2m) defines the W side of the interior. The cliff changes direction, at an oblique angle, from a NNW-ESE orientation to a NE-SW orientation at W giving the interior its pentagonal shape. The earth and stone bank has a discontinuous outer facing of upright limestone slabs on the N and half of the E side. There are many small gaps (Wth 0.7-1m) through the bank. The interior is undulating and clear of overgrowth. To SE of centre is a weathered rectangular limestone block (L 0.9m; Wth 0.7m; H 0.65m; long axis E-W) with possible packing-stones under its N side. A denuded relict earth and stone field boundary (L 16m, oriented ENE-WSW) abuts the NE corner of the fort. This field boundary is visible in an aerial photograph (IASAP, 3043028-9) where it is seen to turn to the N c. 20m from the fort towards a cliff-edge fort (SL033-056----) c. 50m to N. Another relict boundary visible in the same photograph abutting the SW corner of the fort is not visible at ground level. • SL033-058 Cliff-edge fort
  Description

  In gently undulating pasture, to S of a steep cliff-edge and within a field system (SL033-070----). An arc (C 18m E-W) of earthen bank (int. H 0.45m; ext. H 0.55m to base of fosse) NE-W abuts a drystone field boundary wall (T 0.65m; H 0.95m) to enclose a semicircular area (dims. 10m SSE-NNW) with a straight NW side (L 18m). A shallow external fosse (D 0.25m) is evident NE-E and S-SW. There are no visible remains of the fort on the N side of the wall which is 4 to 9m in from the cliff-edge.   Description

  In rocky pasture, on top of a natural hillock. A roughly oval area (14m N-S; 18m E-W) defined by an earth and stone bank (int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.8m) NNW-NE, by a scarp (H 0.6m) NE-S and NW-NNW and by a steep natural slope (H 3.5m) S-NW. For a short section along the S arc there is no enclosing element visible. There is a possible entrance (Wth 4m) at NE. The grass-covered interior is undulating with many rocks close to the surface. There is a souterrain (SL033-059002-) in the SW quadrant. • SL033-059002 Souterrain
  Description

  In the SW quadrant of a rath (SL033-059001-), close to the scarp which encloses the interior. A S-facing opening consists of a ramped entrance into a rock-cut passage (Wth 1.3m; H 1.5m) roofed with limestone lintels. The passage extends for c. 10m to the N as evidenced by a line of roof lintels with at least six gaps between them. Two other gaps between lintels are visible just to S of the centre of the rath. • SL033-060001 Field system
  Description

  In undulating rocky pasture, on a slight SE-facing slope. Immediately to E of two house sites (SL033-060002-; SL033-060004-) and another relict field (SL033-060003-). A pentagonal field (20m N-S; 22m E-W) defined by an earth and stone bank (int. H 0.35m; ext. H 0.45m) with an external fosse (D 0.4m) or drain on the NE, SE, SW and NW sides. The N side is defined by a WSW-ENE relict field bank (int. H 0.65m) with a relict drain (D 0.7m) on its N side. The interior slopes gently down to S and is gently undulating. The natural ground level immediately to N of the field is higher than that of the interior. A short stretch of a relict field bank abuts the field at S. The banks enclosing this area are exactly similar in form to the relict field banks visible across the area. This enclosure appears to be a small relict field being part of the more extensive field system. Similar small relict fields are visible on the ground and the RMP (1995) map to the E and SE of this site. This is part of a larger field system (SL033-070----). • SL033-060002 House - indeterminate date
  Description

  Listed in both the SMR (1989) and RMP (1995) and classified 'Hut Site (s)' and 'House' respectively. Not marked on the 1838 edition of the OS 6-inch map but shown on the 1941 edition. Immediately N of a relict field (SL033-060003-) and at the NW corner of a relict field (SL033-060001-). The foundations of a roughly rectangular structure (c. 3m N-S; c. 19m E-W) with four internal N-S dividing walls giving a total of five rooms (dims. of the largest room: 2.85m N-S; 5.8m N-S). Both the external and internal walls are low (H 0.2m) and of earth and stone construction. The internal floor level of each room is raised slightly above the external ground level.   Description

  Immediately to S of a house site (SL033-060002-) and within a field system (SL033-070----). A roughly wedge-shaped slightly raised area (19m NE-SW; Wth 7.6m W end; Wth 5m E end) defined by an earth and stone bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.8m) on all sides. An external fosse (D 0.45m) is evident on the W, N and part of the S sides. Because of the underlying natural slope, the interior of this field is slightly lower than the floor level of adjacent house. It is undulating and clear of overgrowth. The fosse enclosing this field kinks around the S side of the house (SL033-060004-) located to the S of this field and links to the fosse enclosing the pentagonal field (SL033-060001-) to the E.   Description

  Immediately S of a relict field (SL033-060003-). The foundations of a roughly rectangular house (long axis ENE-WSW) divided internally into two rooms (Room 1: 2.9m NNW-SSE; 4.2m ENE-WSW; Room 2: 2.9m N-S; 7.3m E-W). Both external and internal walls are low (H 0.55m) and of earth and stone construction. The internal floor level of the individual rooms is raised slightly above external ground level.   This is an extensive field system characterised by low earth and stone banks with or without associated fosses.   Description

  In pasture, on a S-facing slope and within a field system (SL033-070----). A circular area (int. diam 35.5m) enclosed by an earthen bank (Wth 3m; int. H 0.8m; ext. H 1.6m) which is best preserved along the S arc. An external fosse (Wth 3.5m; D 0.4m) is best preserved along the N and W arcs. There is a possible entrance (Wth 2m) in the S arc where a field boundary (on an ENE-WSW axis) extends from the rath. The interior slopes gently down to S. H 2m) with an external fosse (Wth 6m; D 1m). There is an entrance (Wth 3m) at SE with a causeway across the fosse. The N portion is poorly preserved. • SL033-070 Field system
  Description

  In undulating pasture, extending across an extensive area (c. 1.2km x 1km) of rocky limestone pasture. A system of relict fields, enclosed by low denuded earthen banks and stone walls, is evident. The field system is sinuous and of no regular pattern. The S portion consists primarily of earth and stone banks with or without associated fosses. In the SE corner is a pentagonal field (20m N-S; 22m E-W) defined by an earth and stone bank (int. H 0.35m; ext. H 0.45m) with an external fosse (D 0.4m) or drain on the NE, SE, SW and NW sides. The N side is defined by a WSW-ENE relict field bank (int. H 0.65m) with a relict drain (D 0.7m) on its N side. A short stretch of a relict field bank abuts it at S. The remains of a five-roomed rectangular house (c. 3m N-S, c. 19m E-W) (SL033-060002-), with low earth and stone walls, is adjacent to the NW corner of this field. Immediately to SW of the pentagonal field is a wedge-shaped field (19m NE-SW; Wth 7.6m W end; Wth 5m E end) defined by an earth and stone bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 0.8m) on all sides with an external fosse (D 0.45m) on the W, N and part of the S sides. The fosse kinks around the S side of an adjacent two-roomed rectangular house (SL033-060004-). Similar small relict fields are visible to E and SE. In the N portion of the field system, in the vicinity of a cliff-edge fort (SL033-196----), is a series of low drystone walls extending across an extensive area of outcropping limestone. Numerous monuments occur within the field system including a cashel and souterrain (SL033-067001; SL033-067002-), two raths (SL033-061----; SL033-066----), two cliff-edge forts (SL033-056----; SL033-058----), a moated site (SL033-053----), a rectangular enclosure (SL033-060003-), a hut site (SL033-196----) and several enclosures (SL033-054----; SL033-057----; SL033-197----).   Description

  In pasture. Visible in an aerial photograph (GSIAP, G 267-8) as a differential growth pattern showing the faint outline of an oval enclosure (diam. c. 12m) on the E side of a field boundary. It is not visible at ground level. • SL033-072 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, on a broad rise on a slight NNE-facing slope. A roughly circular raised area (28m N-S; 26m E-W) defined by a scarp (H 1.3m) with a slight internal lip (H 0.35m) SE-NW, by an earthen bank (int. H 0.5m; ext. H 1.5m) NW-N and by a field boundary NE-SE. A WSW-ENE field boundary is built 1m outside the external base of the bank NW-N and it is possible that this section of bank is not an original feature but the result of disturbance to the edge of the interior during construction of the field boundary. There is an entrance at W consisting of a ramp (Wth 3m) with a causeway across the fosse. An external fosse (D 0.2m) is evident SE-NW. The interior slopes slightly down to NE and is dry and clear of overgrowth. • SL033-073001 Road - road/trackway
  Description

  In undulating pasture, on the E side of a road. This road is not visible at ground level. It is visible in an aerial photograph (GSIAP, G 267-8) as a curvilinear cropmark (L c. 300m) consisting of two narrow parallel lines of dark vegetation, c. 10m apart. The cropmark is parallel to the present road for most of its length but curves gently to the NE at its N end. It is crossed by another similar linear cropmark (L c. 400m NE-SW), the SW end of which joins the present road. No road is indicated on the 1838 or 1941 OS 6-inch map in the vicinity of these cropmarks so it is assumed that they represent a road or earthwork predating the 1838 OS 6-inch map but possibly much older. A circular enclosure (SL033-073002-) lies c. 100m to E. • SL033-094 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, on the top of the S-facing slope of a drumlin. A raised circular area (26.5m N-S; 27m E-W) defined by two earthen banks and an intervening fosse. The inner bank (int. H 0.3m; ext. H 2.85m) is evident all round. There is a gentle slope (H 0.35m) from the base of the inner bank into the interior. There is a possible entrance at NW with a break (Wth 5m) in the inner bank, a slight causeway across the fosse and an opposing break (Wth 6.5m) in the outer bank. A second possible entrance occurs at ENE with a break (Wth 6m) in the inner bank, a slight causeway across the fosse and an opposing break (Wth 1.6m) in the outer bank. The intervening fosse (Wth at base 4m) is evident all round. The outer bank (int. H 0.8m; ext. H 0.3m) is evident S-N, with short sections also visible at NNE, E and SE. It is incorporated into a field boundary SE-S. There is a recent gap (Wth 4m) in the outer bank at SW. The interior is level, dry and clear of overgrowth. • SL033-095003 Mound
  Description

  Not included in the SMR (1989) but listed in the RMR (1995) and classified 'Mound'. Not shown on any edition of the OS 6-inch map. In wet pasture, on a slight E-facing slope and to S of the junction between two small fields (SL033-095001-, SL033-095002-). A flat-topped oval mound (6m N-S; 10m E-W; H 0.6m) enclosed by a drain (D 0.15m) which is an extension of that enclosing the two adjacent fields to N.The function of the mound is unknown and the field archaeologist considered it and the adjacent fields to be post-medieval in date.   Not listed in either the SMR (1989) or the RMP (1995). Not shown on any edition of the OS 6-inch map. In gently undulating wet pasture, on a gentle SE-facing slope. The field system is very low in profile and consists primarily of relict field drains (Wth Top 4m-5m; Wth base 1.5m-2m; D 0.15-0.3m). • SL033-187 House - 18th/19th century
  Description

  Listed in the SMR (1989) and classified 'Enclosure(s)'. Not included in the RMP (1995). The original information came from aerial photograph (IASAP, 3043028-9). A field inspection in 1992 recorded that there were no features here except a quarry hole. (SMR file). It was revisited as the aerial photograph showed foundations of rectangular structures likely to be of 18th/19th century date. In undulating pasture, on gentle S-facing slope. The fragmentary remains of a rectangular house (19m NE-SW; 5m NW-SE) with earth and stone walls (int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.25m). The walls survive on NE, SE and part of NW sides. The interior is level and clear of overgrowth. A return (L 2m) of the NW wall suggests a possible internal division, dividing the house into rooms of roughly equal size. A thickening of the SE wall (L 2.6m; T 1.55m) toward its SW end indicates the probable position of the fireplace. An earth and stone bank extends SE from E corner of this house linking it to another rectangular structure (12m NW-SE; 7m SW-NE) immediately to E. This structure, which may have been an outhouse, has earth and stone walls (int. H 0.35m; ext. H 0.4m) on all sides apart from NW where edge is defined by an inward facing scarp (H 0.75m). Breaks in the wall at the SW corner (Wth 1.8m) and at the SE end of NE wall (Wth 1.7m) may have been entrances. The interior is level with no evidence for internal division. The interior is flush with the external ground level on all sides except at NW where it is sunken. This is probably post-1700 AD in date.   Description

  In pasture, on a S-facing slope c. 100m E of a rath (SL033-061----). The remains of an oval hut (int. diam. 7m N-S; 3m E-W) enclosed by a stone wall (T 1m; H 0.3m). Possible entrances are at E (Wth 2.4m) and W (Wth 1m). There is a field system (SL033-070----) in the surrounding area to N and W.   Description

  In pasture, on a S-facing slope and within a field system (SL033-070----). A raised D-shaped area (dims. 30m N-S) with a straight S side (L c. 55m) enclosed by an earth and stone bank (Wth 1.5m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 1.2m). The straight side and the NW arc are incorporated into a field boundary. There is a cashel (SL033-067001-) in the adjoining field to S. • SL033-198 Kiln - lime
  Description

  Not included in the SMR (1989) but listed in the RMP (1995) and classified 'Lime Kiln'. This mid/late 19th-century limekiln is built against the slope and lies adjacent to the road. It is a square structure (2.5m x 2.4m) with rounded corners. The front elevation (H 3m) has a recess (Wth 1.6m; H 1.85m; D 1.3m). The diameter of the funnel measures 2m and the top of kiln (int. 2.5m x 2.5m) is enclosed by a stone wall (T 0.6m). This is probably post-1700 AD in date.
