• TS057-001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On top of a very slight rise in gently undulating pasture. Another ringfort (TS057-001----) is visible c. 180m to the WSW and a stepped-barrow (TS057-003001-) is visible c. 185m to the SE. Raised circular area (diam. 24m) enclosed by a steep earthen scarp (Wth 5m; ext. H 1.9m) with a largely silted up flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 4m; D 0.4m). Field bank orientated NNE-WSW extends across the fosse to within 2m of the external base of the scarped edge at WSW and at NW and is separated from the base of the scarped by livestock tracks. Break (Wth 2m) across the scarped edge with a causeway (Wth 6-7.5m) across the scarped edge at S marks the position of the original entrance. Interior is dished with an area (diam 7-8m) in the centre that slopes gently down toward the entrance at SSE. The interior is dry and clear of overgrowth.   Description

  On top of a very slight broad rise in gently undulating pasture. Another ringfort (TS057-001----) is visible c. 180m to the WSW and a stepped-barrow (TS057-003001-) is visible c. 185m to the SE. Raised circular area (diam. 24m) enclosed by a steep earthen scarp (Wth 5m; H 1.9m). At the base of the scarp is a largely silted up flat-bottomed fosse (Wth at base 4m; D 0.2m) with an intermediate bank (overall Wth 14m; Wth at top 6m; H 0.4m) and external fosse (overall Wth 5.2m; Wth at base 1.2m; D 0.2m). NNE-WSW orientated field bank extends across the first fosse to within 2m of the external base of the scarped edge at WSW and at NW and a modern ENE-WSW orientated field boundary bank lies along the external edge of the intermediate bank SSE-SSW. The external fosse is not visible SE-SW. Break (Wth 2m) across the scarp, with a possible lining of rubble stone blocks on either side, and causeway (Wth 6-7.5m) across the first fosse at S marks the position of the original entrance. Interior is dished with an area (diam 7-8m) in the centre of the interior that slopes gently down toward the entrance at SSE. The interior is dry and clear of overgrowth. A circular outer concentric enclosure (diam. c. 54m), which appears to be defined by a bank and fosse, is visible on an aerial photograph (Bruff aerial survey ref. 3616) (Doody 1993, 177). • TS057-003001 Barrow - stepped barrow
  Description

  In low-lying level wet pasture. Ringfort (TS057-002----) visible c. 185m to the NW and an enclosure (TS057-003002-) visible c. 125m to the SE. Central roughly circular slightly raised area (diam. 12m) enclosed by an earthen scarp (Wth 4m; ext. H 0.25m) with a level circular area (Wth 4m) around its base. At the external edge of the level area is a narrow earthen bank (int. H 0.4m; ext. H 1.3m; Wth at top 0.4m; overall Wth 3.8m) with a distinct inner lip (Wth 2m; int. H 0.2m) and an external flat-bottomed water-logged fosse (Wth 4m; D 0.6m). There is no distinct entrance feature. A NE-SW orientated relic field drain links to the fosse at NW and an E-W orientated relic field drain links to the fosse at ESE. The interior is dry and clear of overgrowth.   Description

  In low-lying level rushy pasture. Barrow (TS057-003001-) is visible c. 125m to the NW. Only an arc (L 28m) of a very low profile circular enclosure is visible SE-W defined by an earthen scarp (Wth 0.65m; ext. H 0.20m) with a shallow external fosse (Wth 3.4m; D 0.2m). • TS057-004 Religious house - Franciscan friars
  Description

  In grassland on S-facing slope of low rise of ground in upland area with good views in all directions. This was the site of a convent of Friars Minor founded during the reign of Henry VI (Gwynn and Hadcock 1988, 272). The Franciscan friary of Kyllalie consistsed of three messuages, 5 acres arable, 1 acre marsh and the site of a watermill (TS057-025----) in Kyllalie and was granted in 1543, rent 4d. to Dermot Ryan and assigned to Mark Magrath (Gwynn and Hadcock 1988, 272). The present remains consist of the wall-footings of the E half of a possible church (approx. ext. dims. 17.4m E-W; 12.6m N-S; wall T 0.8m) of which only a short stretch of the N wall (L 3.4m; H 0.5m) survives above ground as well as the lower courses of the E wall (H 1.2m) and the S wall (L 4.8m ; H 0.5m). The remains of a range of buildings is evident from a wall which runs southward from the S wall of the church (L 18m) and then returns W for a distance of 6.5m. There is no evidence of any wall along the W side of this range of buildings (overall internal dims. 29.5m N-S x 9.2m E-W) and a small quarry (dims. L 13m; top Wth 3.5m; base Wth 2m; D 0.9m) running N-S along this side may have removed all evidence of the buildings. The walls of the church were constructed with coursed red sandstone rubble. It is depicted on 1st ed. OS 6-inch map as a long rectangular building orientated on an E-W axis with a second building running N-S to S of the W end of the church. There is no evidence of any burial ground associated with the abbey. Described in the OS letters as Mainistir Cillin na Geala of which only a small fragment of one wall remains which measures three feet thick (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 12).   Description

  On a very slight SE-facing slope in pasture with ringforts (TS057-008001- and TS057-009----) visible on slightly lower ground c. 550m to the SW. Circular slightly raised area (diam. 24m) enclosed by a gently sloping earthen scarp (Wth 1.45m; H 65m) with an external broad flat-bottomed fosse (Wth at base 2m; overall Wth 3.25m; D 0.45m). Fosse absent from SW-NW where a N-S orientated field drain abuts the external base of the scarp at W. Original entrance is not recognisable. • TS057-007 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On top of a very slight rise in gently undulating pasture, on a slight SW-facing slope. Raised circular area (diam. 20m) enclosed by a steep earthen scarp (Wth 1.5m; ext. H 1.5m) with an external flat-bottomed fosse (Wth 2m; D 0.6m). From NNE-NE and E-SE the fosse is infilled and barely visible. From NE-E the fosse has been widened (Wth at base 4m) and the outer edge straightened off to incorporate the outer line of the fosse into a NNW-ESE orientated field boundary bank. From SE-SSW an ENE-WSW orientated public road overlies the outer half of the fosse. Original entrance is not recognisable and livestock tracks (Wth 1.5m) through the scarped edge at N and at SE allow access to the interior. Interior is level, dry and clear of overgrowth.   Description

  On a slight NNW-facing slope in tillage. Ringfort was bisected by a WNW-ESE orientated field bank and the N half has been removed. Semi-circular area (dims. 14m NNE-SSW; 26m WNW-ESE) enclosed by a steep earthen scarp (Wth 3m; H 1.6m) with an external steep-sided fosse (Wth at base 1m; overall Wth 5m; D 1.55m). From WNW-ESE the scarped edge and the fosse have been removed and a very slight irregular semi-circular rise shows the original extent of the ringfort. The original entrance is not recognisable.   Description

  Extending across three gently undulating fields, with the central field under tillage and the N and S fields under pasture, on a general slight W-facing slope overlooking slightly lower wetter ground to W. Trackway identified on aerial photograph (Bruff Photo No. 2026). Gently curving N-S orientated slight W-facing scarp (Wth 6-8m; H 0.4-0.6m; L N-S c. 110m) skirting an area of wet ground to the W.   Description

  In level wet pasture. Ringforts (TS057-008---- and TS057-009----) visible c. 130m and c. 375m to the S respectively. Roughly D-shaped slightly raised area (dims. 22m NNW-ESE; 14m WSW-ENE) enclosed by a broad gently sloping earthen scarp (Wth 2.2m; H 0.4m) but visible as a roughly circular area on aerial photograph (Bruff Site No. 37; aerial photo 2024). From SSW-NNW the WNW portion of the interior is absent with the current edge of the ringfort defined by a roughly linear irregular NNW-ESE orientated scarp. The original entrance is not recognisable.   On the NE side of a small gently sloping hillock, on a slight NE-facing slope, in undulating pasture. A limestone standing stone (0.7m x 0.26m; H 1.65m) roughly rectangular in plan, orientated N-S.   Description

  Detached five-bay single-storey with attic farmhouse, built c. 1840, with lobby-entry plan and having single-storey lean-to extension to west. Now disused. Pitched slate roof with rendered chimneystack and replacement uPVC rainwater goods with cast-iron supporting brackets. Rendered random rubble sandstone walls. Square-headed window openings with rendered brick surrounds and having remains of timber sliding sash two-over-two pane windows, with limestone sills and cast-iron railings. Round-headed window opening to attic storey in east gable having remains of timber sliding sash six-over-six pane window and cast-iron railing. One-over-one pane window to rear. Four-centred arched door opening with spoked fanlight and timber battened door. Outbuildings with rubble stone walls and pitched slate roofs to site, with cast-iron water pump to yard.
