• WM009-001 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on top of a slight natural rise in undulating reclaimed grassland, with good views to the W, N & E. A stream which marks the county boundary with Meath is 90m to W. A sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 35m N-S; 39m E-W) enclosed by a poorly preserved earthen bank and a shallow external fosse. Traces of cultivation ridges are visible running E-W across the interior of the monument. 5m to the SSE of this monument is an irregular shaped area (approx. diam. 40m N-S; 43m E-W) enclosed by a slight earthen bank which is visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. This field has several old water courses and drainage channels visible on the Digital Globe aerial photograph. It is possible that this earthwork or possible enclosure immediately to SSE is related to post-1700 land reclamation works. The morphology of this earthwork is irregular and ragged in outline compared to the circular nature of the adjoining ringfort.   Description

  Situated on E facing slope of a prominent hillock in the demesne lands of Killua Castle which is 545m to SE. A small sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 9m E-W; 7m N-S) enclosed by a well preserved earthen bank and steep external fosse. The interior slopes from W-E. Located on the landscaped grounds of Killua Castle and possible that it is a tree-ring of post-1700 date. No antiquity depicted at this location on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. • WM009-008 Ritual site - holy well
  Description

  Situated immediately E of the walled garden of Killua Castle which is located 210m to W. The medieval church ruins (WM009-043----) of Knock Killua are located 470m to SE. Not depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch but shown on the 1911 ed. OS 6-inch map as 'St Lucy's Well'. In 1875 the Ordnance Survey Field Name Books recorded that ‘there was formerly a monastery here and it appears that this well was in connection with it’. Some member of the Chapman family got the name St Lucy cut on a stone which is inserted in stone bank over the well. It is possible that the name should have been 'St. Lua' instead of 'Lucy'. However Cogan (1867, 287) recorded that 'the old church (WM009-043---) was dedicated to St. Lucy, and a holy well still bears her name in the neighbourhood'. St. Lua's Monastery in gothic script is annotated on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map in the area around Killua Castle. Probable holy well dedicated to St. Lua rather than Lucy and associated with medieval church (WM009-043----) of Knock Killua. Holy well described by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage as following; 'Well housing holy well, built c.1800, consisting of an earthen and rubble stone mound on irregular plan containing a small limestone-faced chamber on square plan with corbelled limestone roof. Cut stone round-headed arch to west face gives entry to well, which is now dry. Oval stone over archway with carved inscription 'St. Lucy'. Loose rubble limestone enclosing walls flank entrance on west face with two steps down to well. An attractive and well-built small scale monument, which is said to have been erected by Sir Benjamin Chapman when he laid out the walled gardens and pleasure grounds to the east of Killua Castle' (www.buildingsofireland.ie).   Situated on the NW face of a natural rise in the Deerpark of Killua Castle located 400m to NNE. A folly depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as 'Monument' in Gothic script is located 120m to NNE. A circular earthen mound (diam. 9.25m; H 4.5m) defined by a scarp and narrow external fosse (Wth 2.5m; D 0.5m). Could be the remains of a designed landscape feature on the demesne lands of Killua Castle. The cropmark of five similar designed landscape earthworks 70m to S can be seen running in a line from W-E on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011.   Description

  Situated on a prominent natural rise in the Deerpark of Killua Castle demesne. Killua Castle 480m to NNE. A folly depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as 'Monument' in Gothic script is located 200m to NE. A raised sub-circular shaped area (approx. diam. 31.5m N-S; 28m E-W) enclosed by two earthen banks with intervening fosse. There is an entrance gap (Wth 3m) at E. The outer bank is visible only from SE-S. The interior rises from the perimeter towards the centre. This ringfort may have been reused as a landscape feature in the post-1700 period. The earthwork may have some association with the Deerpark of Killua Castle. Depicted as a tree plantation and not as an antiquity on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map which casts doubt about the antiquity of this earthwork.   Situated on NE facing slope of a natural rise in the Deerpark of Killua Castle demesne. Killua Castle 410m to NNE. Similar designed landscape feature (WM009-009---) 45m to SSE and possible ringfort (WM09-010----) 65m to SW. A folly depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map as 'Monument' in Gothic script is located 120m to NE. A small circular shaped earthen mound (diam. 10m; H 1m) defined by a scarp and narrow fosse with evidence of post-1700 quarrying at the foot of the mound at SW. There is a slight depression in the top of the mound and there are a number of tree stumps on it. Could be the remains of a designed landscape feature tree ring on the demesne lands of Killua Castle. The cropmark of five similar designed landscape earthworks 70m to S can be seen running in a line from W-E on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. • WM009-056 Barrow - unclassified
  Description

  Situated in demesne lands on the post-1700 Deerpark of Killua Castle located 570m to NNE. Ringfort (WM009-010----) 90m to N, two landscape features (WM009-009-/011----) located 160m to NNE. One of seven small circular-shaped earthworks (WM009-050-/051-/052-/053-/054-/055-/056-) roughly on a line running E-W that are visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph taken November 2011. Could be a group of prehistoric barrows later reused as landscape features. Alternatively the earthworks could be solely associated with post-1700 landscaping of the Deerpark belonging to Killua Castle. This area was once planted with tree groves with an old pathway running through the deerpark as depicted on the first ed. OS 6-inch map. A post-1700 ‘Monument’ has been erected on the demesne approx. 270m to the NNE. The ‘Old Deer Park’ of Killua Castle is located 650m to the S as depicted on the 1837 ed. OS 6-inch map. • WM009-057 Enclosure - large enclosure
  Description

  Situated in demesne lands on the post-1700 Deerpark of Killua Castle located 550m to E. Ringfort (WM009-010----) 90m to N, two landscape features (WM009-009-/011----) located 160m to NNE. Cropmark of large roughly circular-shaped enclosure (approx. diam. 90m) visible on OSI aerial photographs. Potential archaeological monument although due to its large size could be a geological rather than archaeological feature. • Bridge, 1780–1820 · Regional interest
  Description

  Single-arch road bridge, built c.1800. Constructed of random rubble limestone with cut limestone coping. Single round-headed arch with cut stone voussoirs. Spans small stream/former mill race.

• Killua Castle, gate lodge, 1820–1840 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay one-and-a-half storey Gothic Revival-style castellated gate lodge, built c.1830, now in use as a private residence. Projecting single-bay full-height tower to centre of front (south) and west facades with smaller slightly advanced towers to corners, all on a square plan. Roof hidden behind heavy battlemented parapet with ashlar coping. Constructed of coursed rubble limestone with projecting ashlar string courses, moulded stone hoodmouldings above openings and moulded stone 'wheel' devices to sides of projecting towers. Pointed-arched and square-headed window openings with timber casement windows. Square-headed doorcase to front of projecting tower to south façade with timber door with brass fittings. Various modern extensions in Gothic Revival-style to north and east. Set back from road in own grounds with gardens to front and rear. Located at east end of Clonmellon Village at the northwest corner of the former Killua castle demesne.

• Killua Castle, gate lodge, 1850–1870 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached single-storey two-bay gate lodge, built c.1860, with projecting single bay gable-fronted porch to front facade (south). Hipped natural slate roof with clay ridge tiles, overhanging bracketed eaves, a single ashlar chimneystack to centre and cast-iron rainwater goods. Constructed of coursed dressed limestone to main facade, rendered elsewhere. Square-headed window openings with ashlar block-and-start surrounds, cut stone sills and replacement windows. Original timber sash window in round-headed opening to east elevation of projecting porch. Square-headed doorcase with replacement door to centre of projecting porch with decorative bargeboards above. Set slightly back from road with modern blockwork wall to street frontage and single-storey flat-roofed extension to rear. Located in prominent position to the east of Clonmellon Village and immediately to the north of the 'Kells Road' entrance to Killua Castle.

• Killua Castle, folly, 1790–1810 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached Gothick 'sham ruin' folly, built c.1800, comprising two storey tower on octagonal plan with base batter and an attached one and a half storey wall on irregular plan. Wall to south of tower is constructed to look like the remains of a gable end of a building. Tower is now partially collapsed and covered in ivy. Constructed of limestone rubble with ashlar trim to openings. The collapsed splayed base reveals an unusual construction of alternative flat stones with rounded stone infill. Narrow square-headed opening flanked by two larger square-headed openings with moulded stone hoodmouldings to first floor of 'gable'. Loop hole openings to ground floor of tower, some with brick surrounds, quatrefoil openings above to first floor. Pointed-arched doorcase with moulded stone surrounds to centre of 'gable' wall. Folly is located to the northeast of Killua Castle, creating a designed vista from the castle, and forms entrance to extensive walled garden complex.

• Killua Castle, country house, 1780–1860 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached multi-bay three-storey over basement castellated Gothic Revival castle on complex plan, built c.1780. Originally constructed as a regular seven-bay three-storey over basement Georgian house with a full-height three-bay canted bay window to centre of entrance façade (northwest) and three-bay bow to centre of rear façade (southeast). It was enlarged on a number of occasions between c.1820 and c.1860 with the addition of various towers on square and polygonal plans, various two-storey extensions to the northeastern end and by the addition of battlements to the parapets to create a Gothic castle on irregular plan. It was gutted c.1950 but is currently been restored and rebuilt as a private residence (2004). Original part of the building was constructed of rubble limestone with a lime render. The later portions are constructed of snecked limestone with ashlar trim. Roof is now gone (possibly flat roofed) but was hidden by battlemented parapets with ashlar crenellations and machicolations. Window openings are generally square-headed with cut stone sills and hoodmouldings, some with intricate stone tracery. A number of round-headed openings are to be found on the ground floor and three-light mullioned windows flank the main entrance to northwest façade. Main entrance to centre of canted bay on northwest facade with pointed-arch headed moulded stone surrounds and hoodmoulding, originally with round-headed fanlight and studded timber double-doors. A tunnel to northeast linked the castle to the walled gardens. Located in the centre of extensive parkland demesne with walled garden to northeast and variety of follies, lodges and an ice-house to grounds.

• Killua Castle, obelisk, 1805–1815 · Regional interest
  Description

  Freestanding obelisk, erected c.1810, comprising coursed limestone plinth on square plan with ashlar coping and tapered ashlar column on square plan (c.10 metres in height), terminated by pyramidal ashlar coping. Carved stone plaques to plinth to north and west faces read 'To the memory of Sir Walter G. Raleigh' and 'Erected by Sir Thomas Chapman Bart. A.D. 1810'. Located in a small hill in a prominent position in the landscape to the west of Killua Castle.

• Killua Castle, monument, well, 1780–1820 · Regional interest
  Description

  Well housing holy well, built c.1800, consisting of an earthen and rubble stone mound on irregular plan containing a small limestone-faced chamber on square plan with corbelled limestone roof. Cut stone round-headed arch to west face gives entry to well, which is now dry. Oval stone over archway with carved inscription 'St. Lucy'. Loose rubble limestone enclosing walls flank entrance on west face with two steps down to well. Well is associated with an early medieval church site dedicated to St. Lua, which is sited to the south. Located to east of former walled garden within Killua Castle Demesne.

• Killua Castle, walled garden, 1780–1820 · Regional interest
  Description

  Walled garden on irregular plan, built c.1800, consisting of two separate spaces. Constructed of random rubble limestone with south-facing sections lined internally with brick. Southern part is enclosed with remains of greenhouse to north wall (south facing aspect). Gateway to west with cast-iron double gates and a blocked segmental headed gateway with ashlar block-and-start surrounds to northeast corner. Northern part of garden is open to east and is lined with brick with remains of apple trees. Remains of three-bay two-story building flush with interior orchard wall to west side with square-headed openings with cut stone sills and an ashlar chimneystack. Gardens are located to the east of Killua Castle in undulating parkland.

• Killua Castle, gate lodge, 1820–1840 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey former gate lodge with integral Tudor-arched carriage arch to centre, built c.1830, having crenellated flanking walls to either side with square-headed pedestrian entrances. Miniature towers on square-plan to either end of two-storey section and flanking central carriage arch. Pitched natural slate roof hidden behind raised crenellated parapet. Constructed of dressed squared limestone with extensive ashlar limestone trim, including moulded string courses, chamfered plinth and loop hole, cross and cross botonée devices. Dressed limestone voussoirs to central carriage arch and chamfered ashlar (flush) block-and-start surrounds with hoodmouldings over to pedestrian entrances. Cast-iron double gates to carriage arch and cast-iron gates to pedestrian entrances. Pointed-arched window openings with chamfered ashlar dressings, cut stone sills and with hoodmouldings to ground floor flanking carriage arch. Gate lodge bounded to east and west by sections of coursed limestone screen walling having ashlar limestone plinth and ashlar limestone copping over. Located to the south of Killua Castle (15306023) and to the southwest of Clonmellon.

• Laurence Lodge, worker's house, 1860–1900 · Regional interest
  Description

  Detached three-bay single-storey with attic level former estate worker's house, built c.1880, having a gable-fronted single-bay enclosed entrance porch with decorative bargeboards over to the front elevation (west). Now in use as a private house. Pitched natural slate roof with overhanging eaves having timber brackets and a single rendered chimneystack (offset) to the centre. Constructed of coursed squared limestone rubble. Square-headed window openings with cut stone sills, dressed stone lintels and replacement windows. Square-headed doorcase to projecting porch having timber door with overlight and dressed stone lintel over. Set back from road in own grounds with rendered wall to road frontage. Located to the east of Clonmellon and to the northeast of Killua Castle (15306023).
