This consists of an earthen bank (Wth 2-2.5m; H 1-1.2m) forming a field boundary. Parts of the remaining perimeter are also encompassed within field boundaries. There is a slight external fosse (Wth 1.6-1.8m; D 0.5m) and the interior is dry and level. (Price 1945, 53) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wicklow' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). - WI012-011 Flat cemetery
Description
Situated on SE edge of a plateau overlooking the Vartry River to the E. The 'Moat' was described in 1838 by John O'Donovan as a ‘remarkable round and pretty high hillock which they call a moate, but which, however, has no sign or vestige of a moate on or about it’ (O'Flanagan 1928, 81). It is depicted as a steep side hillock on the 1838 ed. OS 6-inch map with OS trig. station marking spot height of 907 ft. OD on the summit of the mound. The revised 1907 ed. OS 25-inch map shows that by this time a gravel pit had been opened in the W quadrant of the hillock and that the profile of the earthwork had been severely altered. This earthwork was visited in 1989 and described as a 'natural sand deposit whose interior has been almost completely removed through quarrying leaving a flat central area (dims. 160m E-W x 120m N-S)surrounded by the undug edge of the natural mound. No trace of any artificial features other than those created by quarrying (discontinued)' (ASI Field Report 09/11/1989). Two urn burials discovered in 1981 when they were exposed on the E side in the section of a natural hillock known locally as 'Sutton's Moat' (Cahill and Sikora 2011, Vol. 1, 656-63). Local folklore from Calary National School recorded that 'The Moate in front of my home was believed to be a "Fairy-Moate" (The Schools’ Collection, Volume 0912, Page 239). - WI012-019001 Church
Description
Situated at the foot of a gentle E-facing slope. The church is represented by a very low bank (H 0.1-0.2m) which defines a rectangular structure (dims. 9.5m E-W; 5.3m N-S) towards the W end of a rectangular platform (dims. c. 13m E-W; c. 7.8m N-S). This occurs in the centre of a D-shaped graveyard (dims. 34m E-W; 30m N-S) occupying the SW portion of a larger oval enclosure (dims. c. 48m E-W; 34m N-S). The graveyard is defined at S and W by an earth and stone bank (Wth 1.3-2m; int. H 0.8-1m; ext. H 1.1-1.3m) with a near-vertical external drystone facing. At the E (straight side) the bank abuts a farmtrack which divides the site N-S. The perimeter of the outer enclosure is represented by a slight scarp to the E of the track. An outer fosse (Wth 3m; D 0.3m) occurs at the SW but the bank continues for some distance to the N where it underlies a farmyard wall. A hexagonal block of granite (L 0.73m; Wth 0.66m; T 0.3m) with a subrectangular basin (D 0.04-0.11m) and no drainage hole lies beside the church site and may be a font or a cross-base.
