• DG021-011 Cross-slab (present location)
  Description

  Situated in the parochial house, Moville for safe keeping. Small cross-slab, measuring 0.61m long by 0.15m widest. It tapers to 0.08m at the end. The cross is carved on the upper (wider) end and is 0.37m long x 0.14m across. It is a latin wheeled cross (raised). The shaft is 0.04m wide, while the top and arms 0.03m and 0.025m respectively. The wheel is 0.017m wide. There is a groove in the centre of the wheel which doubles at the 2 arms and top and extends down the shaft for a distance of 0.085m. This doubling at the arms top and shaft has the effecet of creating an inner cross which has an expanded (sq.) at the centre. There is some damage to the lower end of the shaft. The cross originally came from Glennagiveny (DG013-003002-) and was dug up from about 3ft under the soil (Donegal Archaeological Survey).

  Description

  St. Columkille's well is now a modernised water spout. Described by Ó Muirgheasa in 1936 as 'There is a St. Colmcille's Well on the shore at Moville' (Ó Muirgheasa 1936, 161). (Ó Muirgheasa no. 105). The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.'   Description

  Single-arch road bridge over small tributary of the Bredagh River, built c. 1780, with square buttresses to piers. Round-headed arch with square rubble voussoirs and keystone. Random rubble walls to parapet with large squared coping stones. Ashlar stringcourse to parapet base. Squared rubble walls to piers and arch barrel. Double carriageway with tarmacadam deck. Forming principal approach from north-west to Moville town centre.

  Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c. 1870, with single-storey porch to principal (west) elevation and single-bay two-storey return to rear (east) elevation. Modern single and two-storey extensions to rear. Pitched slate roof with exposed rafter ends with two gabled roof projections, and smooth rendered coped chimneystacks with polygonal and circular terracotta pots. Cast-iron rainwater goods. Smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walls with chamfered block-and-start quoins and smooth rendered plinth course. Smooth rendered walls to extensions. Square-headed window openings with stucco surrounds and two-over-two pane timber sliding sash windows and stone sills, Wyatt windows with flanking console mouldings carrying cornice to ground floor principal elevation. Depressed-arched window opening to porch with two-over-two pane timber sliding sash window and stone sill. Square-headed window openings with six-over-three horned timber sash windows to return. Two square-headed door openings to porch with timber panelled door flanked by timber surrounds and consoles carrying corniced lintel. Set within own grounds with low rubble wall to the south-west and cast-iron gates mounted on coped ashlar gate piers.

  Detached three-bay two-storey house, built c. 1870, with single-storey gabled porch to principal (west) elevation and gabled half-dormer attic level. Single-bay two-storey return to rear. Pitched natural slate roof with exposed timber rafter ends and timber bargeboards to gables and gabled half-dormers. Red brick coped chimneystacks with terracotta pots and cast-iron rainwater goods. Roughcast rendered walls with rendered stone plinth course. Segmental-headed window openings with one-over-one pane horned timber sliding sash windows and stone sills. Segmental-headed door opening with replacement timber door and overlight. Set within own grounds with coped roughcast rendered walls and cast-iron gate. Single-storey outbuilding to rear with corrugated-metal roof. Gateway to the south-west having rendered gate piers and wrought-iron gate. Located to the north-west of the centre of Moville.

  Attached two-bay two-storey over basement level (to rear) house, built c. 1860. One of a terrace along with its neighbours to either side. Pitched fibre-cement tiled roof with red brick chimneystack to south gable end having red brick stringcourse, rendered coping, terracotta pots; cast-iron rainwater goods. Smooth rendered walls. Square-headed window openings with rendered architrave surrounds, one-over-one pane horned timber sliding sash windows, and painted concrete sills. Square-headed door opening with rendered architrave surround, plinth blocks, and timber panelled door. Fronts directly onto street, located to west side of Malin Street to north-west of Moville town centre.

Square-headed window openings with one-over-one pane horned timber sliding sash windows, and painted stone sills. Square-headed door opening with timber panelled door and plain overlight.   End-of-terrace attached four-bay two-storey house with half-dormer attic level, built c. 1880, having shopfront. Pitched natural slate roof with yellow brick chimneystacks to gable ends (north and south) having angled brick coping course and with terracotta pots, over, yellow brick dogtooth eaves courses, cast-iron rainwater goods, and with terracotta ridge tiles. Three gabled-fronted half-dormer openings to front elevation (west) having decorative pierced timber bargeboards, and with cast-iron finials over gable apexes. Smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walls with raised block-and-start quoins to the corners of the front elevation. Shallow segmental-headed window openings with replacement windows, painted stone sills to third floor. Square-headed door opening to the north end of the front elevation with replacement door and plain overlight. Shopfront comprising central square-headed doorway with modern door and overlight flanked to either side by square-headed fixed-pane display windows with replacement fittings, and having fascia over with raised lettering reading ' WILLIAM MORRIS' with moulded cornice over forming sill course at first floor level. Pitched natural slate roof with plain timber bargeboards and finials to dormer gables, cast-iron rainwater goods, and with yellow brick chimneystacks to the gable ends (north and south). Smooth rendered walls with smooth rendered plinth course, and moulded eaves course. Paired square-headed window openings at ground floor level having rendered architrave surrounds, moulded lintel\hood over, painted stone sills, and with one-over-one pair timber sliding sash windows; square-headed window openings to dormers having one-over-one pane timber sliding sash windows. Pitched natural slate roof with smooth rendered chimneystacks to ridge and to east gable end having cornice coping and polygonal pots over, and with cast-iron rainwater-goods. Roughcast rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth course, and with articulated smooth rendered block-and-start quoins to corners. Pitched artificial slate roof with yellow brick chimneystacks, painted stone cornice eaves course, and with cast-iron rainwater goods. Smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walls with articulated smooth rendered block-and-start quoins and smooth rendered plinth; smooth rendered walls to rear elevation and to south-west gable end. Square-headed window openings with rendered reveals, replacement windows and painted sills. Round-arched door openings with rendered patent reveals, replacement timber panelled doors, and plain glazed overlight. Fronts directly onto street at corner of Montgomery Terrace and Foyle Street. Pitched artificial slate roof with yellow brick chimneystacks to gable ends, painted stone cornice parapet to eaves, and with cast-iron rainwater goods. Smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walls with articulated block-and-start quoins to the north-east corner, and with smooth rendered plinth. Pitched natural slate roof to main hall and to porch having blue-black roll clay ridge tiles, painted half-rounded cast-iron gutters on paired moulded rendered modillions, painted round cast-iron downpipes, smooth rendered eaves course, and with replacement rainwater goods to south porch. Pitched natural slate roof with ashlar sandstone gable copings having moulded sandstone kneeler stones to eaves, and with bracketed modillion eaves course. Squared and snecked rubble limestone walls over chamfered plinth course with diagonally-set stepped buttresses to corners having ashlar sandstone feathered skews over, and with flush ashlar sandstone block-and-start quoins to corners. Paired pointed-arched window openings to side elevations of nave having ashlar sandstone surrounds, sandstone mullions, chamfered ashlar sandstone sills, and with leaded stained glass windows to the south elevation and cast-iron quarry-glazed windows to the north elevation. Weather glazing to window openings to the south. Alternating cusped openings with louvered vents and quatrefoil motifs to tower at belfry level having cut sandstone surrounds and with continuous sandstone hoodmoulding over. Pointed-arched doorway to front face of tower (south) with chamfered ashlar sandstone staged surround, cut stone hoodmoulding over, and with battened timber double-doors with wrought-iron studs, and with decorative wrought-iron hinges. Flight of cut stone access steps with modern balustrade and rail. Shouldered door opening to north elevation having dressed chamfered ashlar sandstone surround, and with battened timber door with decorative wrought-iron hinges. Exposed high-braced timber kingpost roof structure to interior with painted ceiling, marble pulpit, timber reredos, ashlar sandstone chancel arch with painted scripture over, painted scripture over chancel windows, wall memorials, including those of the Montgomery family to the south wall, timber pews, organ to the north-east corner, and with encaustic tiled floor. Set back from road with mature trees to site, lawned areas to north and south. Located to the east of Moville. Graveyard to rear (north) with cut stone gravemarkers. Rubble stone boundary wall to the south having crenellated coping over. Gateway to the south having rendered piers (on square-plan) with modern timber gates.

  Detached three-bay two-storey house with attic level, built 1776, having central single-bay three-storey gable-fronted projection to the main elevation (south) with two-storey canted bay window and with Venetian-style window opening over, and with central single-bay three-storey return to rear (north). Two-storey returns and later additions\extensions to rear (north). Now out of use and derelict. Pitched natural slate roof with raised ashlar coping to gable ends (east and west), three rendered and stepped chimneystacks (one to either gable end and one offset to the east side of centre) having terracotta pots over, projecting eaves course, and with some remaining sections of cast-iron rainwater goods. Terracotta ridge tiles to rear return to the north-west. Smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walls. Square-headed window openings with remains of two-over-two pane timber sash windows, and painted stone sills; Wyatt windows to front elevation at ground floor level to end bays (east and west). Round-arched door opening to the west side elevation having timber panelled double-doors with fielded panels, plain fanlight, and with render doorcase comprising engaged Doric-type pilasters (on square-plan) with moulded architraved surround over to fanlight having keystone detail. Set within modern housing development with modern single-storey rendered flat-roofed extension to the north-west of the rear elevation. Site of former walled garden to the north-west. Set slightly back from main road to the east end of Moville town centre.

Pitched natural slate roof to main body of building having slightly sprocketed eaves, blue-black clay ridge tiles, projecting rendered eaves, two central roughcast rendered chimneystacks to ridge with smooth rendered stepped capping, replacement gutters, and painted round cast-iron downpipes. flat-roofs to block to rear and to modern additions. Pebbledash rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth course; smooth rendered eaves course to block to rear and to the west. Rusticated cut-limestone plaque inscribed: "Scoil Ioseph/Scoil Náisiúnta/(Mag-Bhile)/1947". Square-headed window openings to front elevation having smooth rendered reveals, painted concrete sills, and with six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows; square-headed window openings to block to north elevation having six-over-six sash pane timber sliding sash windows, and high-level timber casement windows to north of main block. Some replacement windows. Square-headed entrance door opening to the east side of block to rear having replacement door, square-headed door opening to the east end of block to the west having smooth rendered surround, and timber panelled door with fielded panels, and stone threshold; door addressed by concrete platform doorstep with metal bootscraper. Set back from road in slightly elevated site to the east\north-east of the centre of Moville. Garden to front of site (south). Bounded to road-frontage to the south by pebbledash rendered wall with saddle back rendered concrete coping over. Modern metal gates to the west boundary.

  Detached three-bay two-storey house on complex irregular-plan, built 1865, having gable-fronted bay to the west end of the front elevation (south) having single-storey bowed bay window at ground floor level with castellated parapet over, single-storey box bay window to the east end of the main elevation (south) having castellated parapet over, gablet to the east end of the main elevation, two two-storey returns north with gablet and projecting gable-fronted single-storey porch to the east elevation, and with single-storey flat-roofed block to the west having castellated parapet over to the front elevation (south). Later single-storey extensions to west. Pitched natural slate roof with projecting eaves having exposed timber rafter end, yellow brick chimneystacks with stepped copping and terracotta pots, decorative pierced timber bargeboards to gable-fronted sections and gablets having timber finials, and with cast-iron rainwater goods. Smooth rendered ruled-and-lined walls over smooth rendered plinth with chamfered smooth rendered block-and-start quoins to the corners. Smooth rendered stringcourses over bow and box bays. Square-headed window openings with render hoodmouldings over, stone sills, and single and paired two-over-two pane horned timber sliding sash windows having horizontal glazing bars. Square-headed window opening to the west elevation at first floor level having tripartite Wyatt-style timber sliding window. Shouldered-headed door opening to the north face of porch to the east having timber panelled door with quatrefoil motifs to lower panels, and metal door furniture. Set back from road in own grounds to the east of the centre of Moville and attractive mature grounds overlooking Lough Foyle to the south. Detached single-storey double-pile outbuilding to the west of site having pitched natural and artificial slate roofs with red brick chimneystack, rubble stone walls with red brick quoin detailing to the corners, square-headed window openings with timber sliding sash windows, square-headed doorways with battened timber doors, and square-headed carriage-arch with sliding battened timber double doors. Rubble stone boundary walls to site boundary to the north. Gateway to the north-east of site comprising a pair of red brick gate piers (on square-plan) having rendered caps, and with replacement metal gates. Rubble stone walls to site.

  Symmetrical pair of detached three-bay single-storey with attic level former gate lodges associated with Ravenshill (see 40809054), built c. 1835, having gateway between. Modern single-storey flat-roofed addition to south of lodge to the west, single-storey additions to rear (east) of the lodge to the east. Now disused. Pitched natural slate roof to each lodge having with roof lights, blue-black clay ridge tiles, central rectangular broached chimneystack with decorative octagonal black clay pot over to each lodge; projecting painted timber eaves on exposed painted timber rafter feet, decorative pierced timber foiled bargeboards to gable ends (north and south), cast-iron rainwater goods, and with decorative carved timber pendant to north gable of each lodge. Roughcast rendered walls over recessed rendered plinth. Square-headed window openings having moulded rendered hoodmouldings over with label-stops, rendered reveals, rendered concrete sills, and replacement windows. Square-headed entrance door openings with replacement doors. Gateway to centre between lodges comprising a pair of rendered gate piers (on pentagonal-plan with canted corners to outer faces) having rendered ashlar coping and pineapple\pine cone finials over, and with a pair of wrought-iron gates. Roughcast rendered lined-and-ruled rendered rubble stone boundary wall to road-frontage to the north having projecting rendered saddle-backed coping over.   Detached three-bay single-storey house with half-dormer attic level, built c. 1835, having central gable-fronted breakfront to the centre of the main elevation (east) with projecting gable-fronted single-bay entrance porch, single-storey canted bay window to the south elevation having crenellated parapet over, and with single-storey returns with castellated parapets over and later extensions to the rear (west) and to the south. Pitched artificial slate roofs with red clay ridge tiles, decorative moulded red clay finial to breakfront, overhanging eaves with timber brackets, decorative pierced timber bargeboards to gable-fronted, carved timber pendant to gable apex to central breakfront, rendered chimneystack to the north gable end, and with rendered chimneystack to the east end of the rear return having four diagonally-set Tudoresque flues over with clay pots. Roughcast rendered walls over smooth rendered plinth course, and with chamfered smooth rendered block-and-start quoins. Smooth rendered lined-and-ruled rendered wall with decorative gabled crenellated parapet wall to west and north; crenellated parapet to canted bay window with moulded render stringcourses over. Square-headed window openings with stone sills, hoodmouldings over with decorative label stops, and with decorative multiple-pane timber sliding sash windows with symmetrical glazing bars with margin panels; square-headed window opening to the south end of the front elevation having stone sill, and timber sliding sash windows with multiple-pane margin glazing bars; square-headed window openings to canted bay to south having stone sills, and with timber sliding sash windows with multiple-pane margin glazing bars having coloured glass to margins. Some replacement windows to other elevations. Recessed Tudor-arched doorway to the front elevation of porch having timber panelled doors with bolection mouldings, pairs of flanking timber pilasters having console brackets over, and with multiple-pane Gothic overlight with cusped heads. Doorway set in gable-fronted porch having moulded coping and stringcourse over, and with flanking pilasters having recessed rectangular panels surmounted by pedestals with eagle finials over. Set back from road in mature site to the east of the centre of Moville, and adjacent to the Lough Foyle shoreline to the south. Block to the north having smooth rendered imperial eagle and additional motifs. Remains of glasshouse to yard having decorative cast-iron frames with foliate motifs and lion’s mask motifs over, and with decorative cast-iron cresting over moulded cornice. Small walled garden to the west having smooth rendered wall to the south, overlooking Lough Foyle, having triangular motifs over, and with imperial eagle and other motifs; red brick and rubble stone walls to other elevations. Gateway flanked by a pair of gate lodges (see 40809053) to the north-west.

Now in use as a parish hall. Pitched artificial slate roof moulded eaves course, curvilinear gables to entrance front and to east elevation comprising convex and concave curvilinear gable parapets surmounted to the centre by pediments with urn finials over, and with pedestals to either end with render urn finials over, date plaque to pediment to the south dated ‘1887’, render eaves course, and with replacement rainwater goods with cast-iron downpipes. Smooth rendered walls to parapet with stringcourse at eaves level to base of parapets; roughcast rendered walls with smooth rendered articulated block-and-start quoins and stringcourse at first floor level, smooth rendered banded channelled walls to ground floor with cornice at window head level and stringcourse at ground floor sill level, and with smooth rendered plinth. Square-headed window openings with replacement multi-paned windows to first floor and replacement windows to ground floor; First floor windows to south gable comprising stucco aedicule with plain pilasters surmounted by triangular pediment with scroll detailing to base, surrounding lugged architraves over moulded apron panels. First floor windows to east elevation comprising lugged architrave surrounds over aprons, paired windows to ground floor of south gable with rosettes over. Square-headed window openings to front elevation (south) and to east elevation at ground floor level having paired six-over-six pane timber sliding sash windows.
