  The source of the information for this record is a reference entitled 'Recent Accessions from County Kerry at Cork University Museum' (Anon 1937) which mentions 'samples of Iron Slag, giving evidence of ancient iron working from Curraheen, Annagh Parish, presented by P.J. O'Sullivan, Tonevane, Tralee.' The area indicated was inspected but no surface trace of Iron Works or associated buildings were visible. No local knowledge of the site exists. (See field inspection report - diary CM18, 61-2, SMR file). Due to the uncertainity regarding this iron working site, the classification has been changed to 'iron works possible'.

  The area indicated was inspected but no surface trace of a souterrain could be found. The entire area has been reclaimed and many of the field fences have been removed. (See field inspection report - diary CM18, 49-50, SMR file). The source for this souterrain is given in the SMR file as Capt. D.B. O'Connell's (1939, 9). An extract from the 'Minutes of the Co. Kerry Field Club' (1941) is also included in the SMR file and contains a detailed description of the souterrain. Its location is marked on Capt. O'Connell's map in the Dept. of Archaeology, UCC. A letter and an extract from OS 6-inch map 37, which are included in the SMR file for this record, relate to a souterrain (KE037-083---) which is further to the NE of where Captain O'Connell's souterrain was marked.

  Description

  A letter in the SMR file for KE037-053---- described this souterrain which was entered c. 18m SSW of a quarry. The souterrain ran up to the edge of the quarry at which point the landowner had caused a capstone to be exposed while digging with a mechanical excavator. The souterrain was drystone built, roofed with lintels and rather low. An accompanying location map shows this souterrain to be the same as that which is entered in the Register of Historic Monuments (SMR File).
