• KE029-314 Mound
  Description

  'Archaeological monitoring of dredging operations at Blennerville Port, Tralee, Co. Kerry, was requested by Dúchas The Heritage Service because of its high archaeological potential, based primarily on the high number of shipwrecks recorded for the area.............Monitoring of topsoil-stripping was carried out on two areas that lie to the south of the boatyard. Monitoring of Area 2 revealed two partially uncovered possible mounds located beside each other. The first was visible as a black spread of charcoal-rich soil and red sandstone, c. 25m x 12m. Immediately to the north-east of and at right angles to the main site a possible second was uncovered, but as it was only partially exposed it is not certain if it belongs to the main mound. Both mounds were subject to small-scale testing and were sampled for dating. The mounds were not affected by further topsoil-stripping and dumping, and both were covered with geotextile matting and reinstated.' • KE038-001 Enclosure
  Description

  This record was formerly classed as an 'enclosure' in both the SMR (1990) and the RMP (1997). According to the field inspection report, it is a 'ring [c. 6m] of loose rough stone with a dip in the centre', possibly non-archaeological (SMR file). It is shown as a circle on the first edition OS 6-inch map where it is abutted by four field boundaries. Though the field boundaries have been removed, the enclosure is still extant. Because of the uncertainty in relation to the nature and classification of this monument, its class has been changed to 'enclosure possible'.

  Description

  Coleman (1950, 29) records that 'in the field north-west of Mr Tim Scanlan's house, a souterrain was discovered which, it is stated, leads into a natural cave' (SMR file). See field inspection report (NF6, 32) (SMR file). According to the field report, there is no visible surface trace of the souterrain and it is not known about locally.

• KE038-005 Enclosure
  Description

  See field inspection report (NF6, 28-9) (SMR file). This enclosure was shown on the 1846 ed. OSi 6-inch map but was levelled prior to the 1892 ed. OSi 6-inch map. According to the report, there are no visible remains of the enclosure although there are undulations in the field.

  Description

  See field inspection report (NF6, 34-5) (SMR file). According to the report, this enclosure was levelled years ago and all that survives is a faint trace of a low rise along the line of the E arc.

• KE038-058 Standing stone
  Description

  'A standing stone is recorded at this site in Tonavane and is marked on the OS 1st Edition 6" sheet as "Gallaun". The stone was extant until the mid-1950's (local information) and was of red sandstone approximately 1.9m in height. • KE038-113 Barrow - pond barrow
  Description

  'Located in a grassy field, which is less than one kilometre from the coast, this almost circular enclosure measures 42.0m N-S by 37.5m E-W. The field in which this occurs has been heavily cultivated and at the moment is given over to the growth of grass for the purpose of silage making. The site is substantially denuded, but shows up as an almost perfect circle on aerial photography. The bank of this enclosure has an average external height of 1.00m and has an average width of 10.0m, no trace of a ditch, internal or external, could be found. The internal area of the enclosure is deeply dished, the lowest point of the interior being 1.50m below the crest of the bank as it now survives. A 9.00m long break in the bank occurs at east- this probably being the result of the enclosing element being pushed into the interior during an attempt at field clearance. Otherwise the interior is featureless. Internal diameter of the site is 22.0m N-S by 17.5m E-W. It seems likely that the banks were constructed by scooping out the material from interior and piling it up to form the enclosing bank.'   Description

  'A standing stone is recorded at this general location in the local parish history (In the Shadow of Sliabh Mis, 2001, 11). A photograph shows the stone to be of irregular shape, while it is described as having been of sandstone and approximately 1.5m in height (local information).   'At a distance of 27m south of the above hut site (KE038-125----) are two more similar sites with similar views and aspect. Again, in both cases modern sheepfolds have been constructed partly on the earlier foundations. The two hut sites are 10m apart with the more easterly example (KE038-134----) being the smaller at a diameter of 3m, while the larger example (KE038-135----) has a diameter of 3.8m. In both cases only the foundations of the earlier huts are visible, partly covered by peat. The foundations indicate a wall width of 0.6m for the smaller example and 0.66m for the larger hut.
