  Description

  'Infra-red aerial photography (National Coastline Survey) clearly shows a circular cropmark enclosure at this location in an area of marshy land close to the flood plain of the River Lee. • KE038-007 Barrow - ring-barrow
  Description

  'Test excavations took place prior to application for full planning permission for a house. The site had been noted from an aerial photograph, and could also be seen on the ground at the time of the excavation. It is in low-lying pasture, with a moderate view all around but particularly uphill to the south. It measures 15.7m north-south 14.6m east-west approx. and consists of a slightly raised interior, c 11m in diameter, and a slight external ditch. Prior to the commencement of this excavation, engineers' test-pits been dug at the northern and southern ends of the monument. To minimise further destruction, Trench 1 (19.2m long in total) was dug from 3m to the north of the site, through the pit to the north and southwards through the centre ofthe site, with a dog-leg to the west to avoid the second pit, as it was found that the stratigraphy was too disturbed in these areas to be of archaeological use. The main feature noted was the fosse, 1.7m wide and at least 0.84m deep. It was not bottomed as this was merely a test excavation to confirm the presence of the monument. Much charcoal was present in the layers investigated but there were no finds. Apart from two possible areas of burning within the monument, there were no other features noted in this trench. Trench 2 ran for 37m in a north-west/south-east direction to the north east of the site. Another possible area of burning or perhaps the base of a small pit was found in the trench, and a narrow U-bottomed fosse/ditch, 0.8m wide and 0.75m deep, was also sectioned. One of its layers was again very charcoal-rich. The monument straddled the development site in question, and that adjacent to it to the west, but investigation took place only within the area defined in the planning application.'   Description

  'Located on the south-eastern side of the village of Blennerville in the north-east corner of a small square field. This site consists of three low, distinct mounds that surround a probably natural depression used as a trough. The mounds measure from the most northerly to the most southerly:.... 7m by 5.5m,....6.3m by 5m and......6m by 4.3m all remain to between 0.6 and 0.8m in height. The trough area opens to the east -north-east and measures 6.8m by 5.6m. It takes the form of an elongated depression ringed by the three distinct mounds.'   Description

  Freestanding circular-plan tapered single-bay five-storey windmill, built c. 1790, having cantilevered timber platform to first floor and timber lattice sails. Built by Sir Rowland Blennerhasset. Extensively reconstructed, c. 1985, to accommodate use as heritage centre. Conical sheeting to revolving roof with timber ball finial. Painted rendered walls. Arched openings, with timber multiple paned windows and boarded doors. Timber framed platform circling building at first floor level with timber stairs. Set on south bank of River Lee at mouth of river.

• House, 1840–1880 · Regional interest
  Description

  Terraced three-bay two-storey slate-hung house, built c. 1860, as a pair with the adjoining house. Extended to east in late twentieth century with two-bay two-storey return and single-bay two-storey gabled projecting bay to north-east. Pitched slate roof with rendered chimneystacks and cast-iron gutter and downpipe. Slate-hanging to façade with render band at eaves. Limestone sills to timber two-over-two pane sliding sash windows. Replacement timber glazed door with overlight. One replacement window to ground floor. Ruled-and-lined rendered garden walls and gate piers.

• Curragraigue House, house, 1790–1810 · Regional interest
  Description

  Terraced five-bay three-storey over part-raised basement house, built c. 1800, as a pair with the adjoining house. Door opening to centre approached by curved flight of steps. Renovated, c. 1900, with rendered façade enrichments added including hood mouldings to openings and raised quoins. Door opening remodelled in latter part of twentieth century. Now in use as guesthouse. Pitched slate roof with large rendered chimneystacks having hexagonal yellow clay pots. North gable chimneystack removed. Painted ruled-and-lined rendered walls with raised render quoins. Shallow window reveals, limestone sills and render hood mouldings to timber two-over-two pane sliding sash windows. Pedimented doorcase removed from north house and replaced with timber boarding. Window shutters to interior. Concrete balustrade and screeded steps to north.

  Description

  Detached eight-bay two-storey house, built c. 1725, possibly incorporating fabric of earlier house. Renovated, c. 1890, with single-bay single-storey projecting porch added originally flat-roofed. Porch renovated in late twentieth century with glazed roof added. Pitched and hipped slate roofs with clay ridge tiles, rendered chimneystacks and central valley. Roughcast rendered walls. Limestone sills to timber six-over-six pane sliding sash windows. Blind openings to façade. Timber panelled eighteenth century door with limestone threshold. Diamond-paned casement windows inserted to porch. Gateway, built c. 1890, to east comprising four limestone ashlar tapered piers with cast-iron gates and railings. Set at an angle to Main Street of village.

  Description

  Attached gable-fronted single-bay double-height coach house, built c. 1750, retaining early aspect. Possibly originally detached. Set at right angles to street with four-bay side elevations. Section of rubble stone-built boundary wall, built c. 1750, to south with elliptical-headed integral carriage arch having bellcote over. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles and stone chimneystack. Coursed rubble stone walls. Timber lintel to gable opening. Slit windows to street elevation. Carriage arch with rubble voussoirs.

Ruled-and-lined and lined rendered walls with raised quoins. Slate-hung side elevation to south-west. Shallow window reveals, limestone sills and render hood mouldings to timber two-over-two pane sliding sash windows. Window shutters to interior. Section of cast-iron railings to forecourt to north-west.
