- KE014-025 Ringfort - rath
Description
Internal diameter 32m N-S, 34.6m E-W Lisroe/Lios Rua (russet ringfort). This site is situated three fields NE of KE014-065----, and it has an extensive view of the surrounding area. A fieldbank runs along the exterior side of the NE sector. This univallate rath consists of a circular area enclosed by a bank and exterior fosse. The enclosing earthen bank is well defined and is, on average, 6.7m in width at the base. It rises to a maximum of 1.8m above the fosse and 1.2m above the interior. The exterior fosse is round bottomed and well defined. It is 1.6m-2.6m wide and .9m deep. The interior is at a higher level than the surrounding land, and access is gained by two entrances: one to the N measuring c5m in width, the second to the SSW measuring c3m wide. In the SW to W sector of the interior is an oblong enclosure, 6m x 17m externally, constructed of stone with 1m thick walls. This is possibly a house-site (KE014-025001-). Immediately W of this is a small mound, 1.5m x 3.6m internally, which displays a lot of stones, possibly suggesting a souterrain (KE014-025002-). The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 476. - KE014-065 Ringfort - rath
Description
Internal diameter 41m N-S, 40m E-W Situated four fields SW of KE014-023----, this univallate ringfort consists of a large circular area enclosed by a well-defined bank of earth and stone. The enclosing bank is c 7m wide at the base and rises to .6m-1.7m above the surrounding land and an average of .75m above the interior. In the NE-E sector of the interior are two semi-circular mounds curving in towards the bank. The NE one would appear to have a 1.8m wide opening to the S. About 4.5m SW of the second enclosure is a small mound, 1.7m x 2.8m. Extending out of this and curving N for c 10m is a depression 3.8m wide. Drystone walling is evident. At the end of this ridge is another small mound, 2.4m x 3m. In the SE sector just S of the ridge is another mound, 2.6m x 3m. These features could be the remains of the souterrain (KE014-065001-) marked as 'cave' on the 1842 OS map. In the SW sector there is a large semi-circular enclosure curved in towards the bank. It possibly had an opening to the NW, where there is a slight break in the bank, and both ends curve inwards. A possible c 4m wide entrance lies to the SW. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 475. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013

- KE014-068 Enclosure
Description
This site is marked on the 1842 OS map as a semi-circular bank, which survives from the NW through W to SSE. It would appear to have been cut by a fieldbank running in a NW-SE direction. This can also be seen on the 1916 map, but a track now runs slightly through the NW sector. Traces of the remains of this enclosure can be seen today. The semi-circular bank is on average 7m wide and up to 1m high. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 1058. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
