• KE001-021 Barrow - ring-barrow
  Description

  This site, situated on poor land sloping in a NE direction, consists of a raised circular area enclosed by a fosse and external earthen bank. The internal circular area measures c26m N-S and 28m E-W and its maximum height above the fosse is 8m. There is a break in the internal area S through SW. In the E sector of the interior is a small mound lined with stones, possibly indicating a burial site, measuring 1m x 1.8m. A section of the internal area has been completely levelled to the S through SW. The internal fosse survives as a well-defined, shallow, flat-bottomed ditch. However, to the NW, S, and SW it is difficult to distinguish: firstly, because of a field fence that cuts through the NW sector of this site, and secondly because the internal area S and SW has been levelled. Overall the width of the fosse ranges between 3m and 4m. The outer earthen bank encloses the whole interior area except to the NW, where it has been cut by a fieldbank. It ranges between 2m and 4m in width at the base. It has a maximum internal height above the fosse of 1.2m and the external height of the bank measures 1.4m.   Description

  Situated on the crest of a hill with an extensive view of the River Shannon to the N and W. An irregularly shaped limestone boulder, the stone stands 1.48m high, and is a maximum of .7m wide at the base and .46m thick. This stone is marked on the 1841-42 and 1914-15 OS maps as 'Cloghlea'.   Description

  This univallate rath is situated in gentle sloping pastureland. However, the site is completely overgrown and detailed measurements could not be taken. The above description is derived from C.   Description

  Internal diameter 37m N-S, 30m E-W This univallate rath is situated NE of a standing stone (KE001-022----). The N sector of the enclosing earthen bank has been incorporated into a fieldbank running NW-SE in direction. The enclosing bank is low and wide and has a maximum height of 1.6m externally, .8m internally and varies in width from 3m-7m. The above description is derived from C. • KE002-023 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Internal diameter 33.4m N-S, 31m E-W Situated on gently sloping pastureland, the view from this site is excellent in all directions. This univallate rath consists of a sub-circular area enclosed by an earthen bank. The bank contains two oblong depressions, one to the N measuring 9m x 2m and one to the E measuring 8m x 2m. The external height of the bank on average measures 1.2m and the internal height .8m. A 4m wide gap in the NE provides access to the interior. An exterior fosse is to be noted from the W through S to E; it measures 2.6m wide and .8m below the height of the surrounding land. The interior is at a slightly higher level than the surrounding land and in the NW sector there is a small depression measuring 1m x 4.6m. The above description is derived from C.
