• KE002-049 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Internal diameter 27m NE-SW, 29m NW-SE Lissatober/Lios an tobair (ringfort of the well). This is a univallate rath consisting of a circular area enclosed by an earthen bank and an exterior fosse. The exterior height of the bank is 1.6m, the internal height on average .8m. The width of the bank at the base varies between 3m-5m. To the SE is a c 3m wide gap providing access to the interior. The fosse survives as a very low, barely perceptible depression which measures c 4m in width and .3m below the surrounding land. The above description is derived from C. • KE002-050 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Internal diameter 25m N-S, 27m E-W Situated NE of KE002-049----, this circular univallate rath has an enclosing earthen bank which measures 1.8m externally and on average .8m internally. The width of the bank on average is 5m. The exterior fosse is not apparent for the full extent of the site. It runs from the NW through N to SE and also appears to the SW. On average it measures 1.6m in width and .6m below the height of the surrounding land. There are two main gaps to the S and E, measuring c4m and c3m respectively. • KE002-064 Earthwork
  Description

  In poorly drained reclaimed grassland.  Two ringforts (KE002-050/049----) 235m to SE and 190m to SSE respectively.  Roughly circular-shaped area (int. diam. c. 35m; overall diam. c. 45m) defined by a ditch visible as a cropmark on 2013-2018 MapGenie aerial imagery, not visible on any edition of the OS maps. Cropmark of linear ditch radiating out from W side of cropmark may be the remains of a levelled field bank/boundary that is contemporaneous with the earthwork.  Cropmark of linear ditch running E-W transects the N section of the earthwork which appears to be the remains of a later field boundary cutting across the site. This field boundary is depicted on the first edition OS six-inch map.  Possibly the cropmark of a levelled ringfort identified during an assessment by the Department’s Archaeology & Built Heritage section of an application for a Licence for a forest road project (DAFM Ref.
