- KE002-051 Ringfort - rath
Description
Internal diameter 27m This site is situated on a rise with extensive views of the surrounding countryside. Very little remains of this possible univallate enclosure and the S and E sectors have been completely levelled. The remaining semi-circular enclosing bank rises to a height of 1m externally and 1m internally. The width of the bank at the base measures 4m. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 158. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
- KE005-003 Ringfort - rath
Description
Internal diameter 33m N-S, 28.4m E-W Situated on gently sloping pastureland this site has excellent views in all directions. This univallate rath consists of a sub-circular area enclosed by a well-defined earthen bank and exterior fosse. NW through W to SW there is no enclosing bank or fosse due to drainage works, and all that remains is a raised area 1.2m above the surrounding land. Elsewhere the maximum height of the bank measures 2.7m externally and 1.3m internally. The fosse, which is steep and U shaped, measures 1.8m in maximum width and 1.4m below the height of the surrounding land. The interior is somewhat overgrown and at a slightly higher level than the surrounding land. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 263. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. - KE005-093 Ringfort - rath
Description
Internal diameter 30m N-S, 23.6m E-W The views from this site are extensive in all directions. Today this univallate rath has been much distorted, and a small stream now runs through it. To the W of the stream a semi-circular area is enclosed by an earthen bank and fosse. On the E side of this area there is a fall of 4.7m to the bed of the stream. The bank survives to a maximum height of 2.6m externally and 1m above the interior. An enclosing fosse exists to the N and SW; it is steep and wide, measuring 2.4m wide and 1m deep. The above description is derived from C. Toal, ‘North Kerry Archaeological Survey’. Dingle. Brandon in association with FAS Training and Employment Authority (1995), no. 264. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 2 August 2013
