- LH007-127001 Enclosure
Description
Discovered during road construction (Excavation Licence No. 94E0075). Heavily truncated before excavation commenced. Remains consisted of two ditches (avg. Wth 6.5m; avg. D 3.5m) running at right angles across the road-take. Artefacts recovered included Souterrain ware pottery, a polished stone axe, a bone comb and flint fragments. A geophysical survey indicated that the ditches formed part of a rectangular enclosure. A substantial portion of the site lay undisturbed on either side of the road. Description
Discovered during road construction (Excavation Licence No. 94E0076) close to a stream and marshy area. The upper layer of the site was removed by construction workers prior to excavation. Excavation revealed two oval pits (diam. 1.6-2m; D 0.5m) which were filled with layers of burnt stones, charcoal rich soil and pockets of clay and sand. Two flint flakes and two tiny fragments of burnt bone were found in the pits. Similar material to what was noted in the pits was observed in the spoil that was moved from above the pits prior to excavation. (Breen 1995, 61) Reference: Breen, T. 1995 Dowdallshill II. In I.
