• MA070-030 Enclosure
  Description

  On a N-S ridge in improved pasture with a steep slope to the E and a coniferous plantation c. 60m to the W. Recorded on the first edition (1837) of the OS 6-inch map as a small circular enclosure (est. diam. c. 20m) and partly indicated on the later, Cassini edition (1920) of the map which depicts a later field boundary (since removed) running E-W across the N limits of the site. No visible surface trace survives and the location is indicated by a circular area (diam. c. 20m) of lush grass growth. • MA070-032 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On a broad N-S ridge in improved pasture surrounded by mixed hazel and coniferous wood from E-S-NNW. A subcircular area (int. diams. 22m N-S; 20m E-W) is defined by a broad flat-topped (av. Wth 3m) earthen bank (av. Wth. 4.5m; int. H 0.3m at E - 1m at W; ext. H 0.7m at W - 1.5m at E) with an entrance gap (Wth 4m) at SE which is partly blocked with cleared field stones. The inner face of the bank is faced with drystone walling (H 0.5m) as is the outer face at E. Elsewhere, especially along S and W, the outer face is poached by livestock. The stone facing is likely associated with the later field boundary walls recorded on the Cassini edition (1920) of the OS 6-inch map radiating off the monument at NE, SE and SW and overlying the original enclosing bank from NE-S-SW. The interior contains a low clearance cairn (max. H 0.45m; L 4m E-W; Wth 3.3m N-S) in the NNE sector. A second rath (MA070-033001-) is partly visible c. 110m to the S. • MA070-034 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In mixed hazel and coniferous woods at the S end of a broad ridge with a narrow strip of improved pasture running N immediately to the N. An overgrown subcircular area (int. diams. 30m E-W; 25m N-S) is defined by a generally uniform broad, earthen bank (av. Wth 6m; int. H 0.6-1.1m; ext. H 1.2-2m) which has been reduced to a scarp (H 2.5m) from E-SSE. The mostly round-topped enclosing bank is heavily burrowed in places and gapped by livestock at SW. • MA070-035001 Water mill - horizontal-wheeled
  Description

  Located on the SE bank of a NE-flowing stream. In the 1980’s two large timbers were exposed on the banks of a stream, c. 0.6m above the water surface, in a sloping cutting, which was made to facilitate cattle access to the water. The timbers represent the in situ remnants of a horizontal water mill. The two timbers lie at right-angles to each other and appear to be mortised together. The larger timber (L 2.34m, Wth 0.15m; D 0.25m), aligned N−S, is rectangular in cross-section. The second timber (L 2.11m; Wth 0.15m), aligned E−W, was embedded in the ground and its depth could not be measured, but a shallow groove (Wth 0.25m) cuts across the upper face 0.75m from its E end. A fragment (max. dim. 0.25m) of a millstone lies in the angle between the two timbers. The fragment represents about a third of a circular millstone with diameter c. 0.75m, and with a central perforation c. 0.15m in diameter. A second broken millstone was found in the stream bed, and consists of half of a millstone of diameter 0.65m, with a central perforation of diameter 13.5m. The upper edge of this stone is bevelled, and there is a lip (Wth 0.025m) encircling the central perforation. In 1985, an OPW drainage scheme was undertaken along the course of the stream. The works were archaeologically supervised to prevent damage to the timbers. The millstone fragment, which lay in the stream bed, was moved and placed beside the timbers. The timbers were then covered with soil. A cutting was opened in the bank of the stream c. 10m E of the timbers to allow cattle access to the stream, and thus minimise further disturbance to the site of the horizontal mill.
