- MA060-067 Fulacht fia
Description
On a gentle E-facing slope in reclaimed pasture. Reported as a possible fulacht fia (SMR file). A faint grass-covered circular area (diam. 12m) is traceable which is level with the surrounding ground except along the E where there is a slight rise in ground level (H 0.7m). The landowner pointed out the location where he recalled a great deal of “burnt stone” being present. A second possible fulacht fia (MA070-027----) lies c. 175m to the S. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy and Leo Morahan Date of upload: 24-9-2025
- MA070-002 Mill - corn
Description
Reported as the site of a possible horizontal-wheeled mill – an early type of water-powered mill in which the wheel turned by water rotates on a horizontal axis (SMR file). Recorded as a rectangular structure (L c. 10m E-W; Wth c. 6m N-S) labelled ‘Mill’ (with a nearby ‘Corn Kiln’ c. 15m to the E) on the first edition (1837) of the O.S. 6-inch map where it is shown straddling a long ‘Mill Race’ which flows N from Levallinree Lough to the SE to Derryhick Lough to the NE. However, the mill and kiln are not recorded on the later OS 25-inch map (1893). Located in rough pasture c. 15m to the E of a small N-flowing stream in a narrow steep-sided valley. No visible surface trace survives and stone, possibly dredged from the nearby stream, partially covers the site. The available evidence suggests this was a corn mill dating to the late-18th/19th century. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy and Leo Morahan Date of upload: 30-10-2025

Description
In pasture just S of the highest point of a N-S ridge overlooking the N end of Levallinree Lough c. 180m to the ESE. An oval-shaped area (int. diams. 23m E-W; 16m N-S) is defined by a bank of earth and stone (Wth 3.5-4.5m; av. int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.5m-1.5m) which is flat-topped (Wth 1.7-2m) along ENE and WSW and round-topped elsewhere. A gap (Wth 3m) at E marks the entrance and there is a later livestock gap (Wth 4.5m) at SSW. A deep (D 2.5m) roughly circular hollow (diam. 15m) lies outside the monument at NNE. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy and Leo Morahan Date of upload: 31-10-2025

Description
In lowlying rough pasture near the N shore of Levallinree Lough in an area prone to flooding and poaching by livestock. Reported as ‘St Partick’s Stone’ (SMR file) and with the continuing local tradition of a stone bearing the imprint of the saint’s footprints. Description
At the E foot of a steep pasture ridge in wet rough grazing liable to flooding from Levallinree Lough c. 100m to the E. Reported as a possible fulacht fia (SMR file). A low irregular-shaped overgrown mound (dims. 15m N-S; 11m E-W; av. H 0.5m) whose composition is uncertain. The site lies between a field wall to the W, a spring-fed streamlet to the N and a wide drain to E. A second possible fulacht fia (MA070-021002-) lies 50m to the S. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy and Leo Morahan Date of upload: 31-10-2025

A horseshoe-shaped earthen mound (dims. 15m N-S; 10m E-W; H 0.2-0.9m) partly encircles a natural spring at N which feeds a streamlet which flows N. While its horseshoe shape is characteristic of a fulacht fia, no stone was obviously evident in the composition of the mound. A thorn bush and briars grow on its S edge. A second possible fulacht fiadh (MA070-021001-) lies 50m to N. Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy and Leo Morahan Date of upload: 31-10-2025

- MA070-023 Crannog
Description
Situated 20m from the current shoreline in the N end of Levallinree Lough which is surrounded by low hills and boggy land. This crannog is not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, but is indicated as a small subcircular island on the 1920 edition. The crannog consists of a subcircular cairn (26.5m N−S; 25m E−W) of medium-sized stones, rising to a height of c. 2.5m above water level. Around the edges are the remains of a palisade of radially-split oak planks set into the lower levels of the cairn material. Outside of this there are circular retaining piles forming a band c. 0.4m from the outer limit of the cairn material. At the SE, a large oak beam (Wth 0.44m; T 0.18m) protrudes horizontally from the lower levels of the matrix of the crannog. It has a mortice cut into it, into which a timber peg is set. Three other beams were noted on the N side of the crannog, at a time when water levels were lower; one measures 6m long, 0.2m wide and 0.2m thick, and contains two mortices. A number of artefacts, now in the National Museum, were recovered: A socketed head of an iron three-pronged fish spear, a socketed iron spade blade and an iron axehead were found at the SE side of the crannog; also recovered were a lead weight, a fragment of a pewter flagon, and a fragment of a whetstone. In addition, four dugout canoes were noted on the lake bottom in the vicinity of the crannog (Lawless et al. 1989, 22). In 1989 two structural oak timbers from the crannog were sampled for dendrochronological dating analysis. One of the beams, which has a ring pattern spanning a 208 year period, tied into a suite of Irish tree-ring chronologies which gives it an end or felling date of AD 609 (ibid., 24). Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 6 September 2018 This monument is subject to a preservation order made under the National Monuments Acts 1930 to 2014 (PO no. 1/1984).
