  The existing circuit is located in the townlands of Gorteen, Ardoughan, Kilemoremoy, Belleek, Ballina, Quignalecka, Quignashee, Ballyholan, Behy More, Corimla South, Carrownlabaun, Bunnyconnellan West, Rathreedaun, Drumsheen and Bunnyconnellan East, Co. Mayo. The proposed development will consist of: (i) The replacement (“restringing”) of the existing overhead line circuit conductor wires with a new higher capacity conductor including installation of a new fibre communication connection. (ii) The replacement of 20 no. of the 63 no. existing Intermediate Polesets (IMPs) with similar polesets. Any replacement polesets will be constructed at, or immediately adjacent to the existing structures that they will replace, will be along the same alignment as the existing line, with a height difference of between 1-2 metres, with the exception of IMP52 where the height difference will be 4 metres. (iii) The relocation of IMP49 on the Behy Road (townland of Ballyholan), to be replaced with 2 no. new polesets (IMP49 and IMP49A) to the east and west of the existing poleset, along the route of the existing line. (iv) The replacement of 3 of the 13 no. existing steel towers (angle masts) with similar structures. (v) The carrying out of civil works for tower foundation strengthening at 3 no. locations and monopole-foundation strengthening at 1 no. location and bar member replacement works at 3 no. locations. (vi) The replacement of hardware and fittings at all locations. (vii) The replacement of crossarms at 20 no. locations. (viii) All associated works within the existing Glenree and Moy substations to accommodate the uprated 110kV overhead line. (ix) Other temporary associated and ancillary development works required for the purpose of the uprate, including construction compounds, the installation of silt traps, silt fences, access tracks, ground protection mats and temporary watercourse crossings. (x) All associated site development works above and below the ground to gain access to the existing structures including vegetation clearance, remedial works on concrete shear blocks, replacement of individual tower members and bolts, replacement of hardware and insulators, replacement of dampers, installation of line identification and danger notices and anti-climbing guards, the provision of temporary access routes and other ancillary works necessary to facilitate the proposed development. • MA030-060 Enclosure
  Description

  Located on a knoll in undulating pasture. This possible enclosure is shown on the 1837 and 1930 OS 6-inch maps as a roughly circular ringfort-like enclosure (diam. c. 40m, 1930), skirted by a laneway at N. At the location, there is a roughly circular hillock (diam. c. 50m) with a domed profile that rises several meters high to a narrow peak. At the top of the hillock is a shallow depression (10m N-S; 8m E-W), possibly a quarry pit. Skirting the base of the hillock at N−SE is a field bank (Wth 1.4m; H 0.5m) lined with hawthorn bushes. A dense covering of gorse, blackthorn and brambles made inspection difficult; it is unclear if there was an enclosure here. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 17 April 2018

• MA030-062 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, on the NW outskirts of Ballina town, located at N end of a small N-S ridge in an area of undulating grassland. Raised oval area (34.6m E-W; 26m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth c. 6-7m) and enclosed by a fosse (Wth 3.7m), with an external bank (Wth c. 4m), which is evident only at W−N. Immediately to N of the rath a portion of the ridge has been deliberately scarped creating the effect of a roughly square platform or annex (25.7m NNE-SSW; c. 23m ESE-WNW) appended to the N−NE side of the rath. The inner bank of the rath is substantial, with a pronounced external slope, especially at NE-E. There is evidence of stone facing in parts along its internal slope. The fosse can be traced for the full circuit. The external bank is extant only on the NW arc; there is no trace of it at N−SE; at SSE−SSW appears to have been truncated by, or possibly partly incorporated into, a later E−W field fence. The interior has a slight slope down to SE. In the S half, close to the bank, is a depression (Diam. c. 3m; D 0.6m), which is almost entirely filled by a massive boulder. There are two gaps in the inner bank, but the original entrance is unclear. A gap (Wth 2.5m) at SE, is partly defined on N side by stones, and immediately to S of this gap, the external face of the bank is roughly faced with boulders. A gap (Wth 2.5m) in the inner bank at the N has a corresponding break (Wth 4m) in the external bank. This break occurs at the junction of the fosse and external bank with the scarp which define the ‘annex’. This ‘annex’ is defined on the S by the rath fosse, on W and N by a scarp (H 1.7m) with a slight internal rim (Wth 1.4m; H 0.2m), but on E only by the natural ridge slope. It is possible that this modification of the ridge is contemporary with the rath, but it seems more likely that it is of more recent date.
