• MA081-036 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In improved pasture, located on a low rise. This possible rath is shown on the 1838 and 1919 OS 6-inch map as a roughly circular enclosure (diam. c. 35m) incorporated at SW–N into later field boundaries, with the townland boundary coinciding with the NW arc.   Description

  On low rise in gently undulating grassland, with good views. This possible rath is not shown on the 1838 OS 6-inch map, but is depicted on the 1919 edition as a hachured circular enclosure (diam. 30-35m) crossed at NW by a field fence on a NE-SW axis. It has been levelled. The NE−SW field fence is extant. An irregular area of rough ground (c. 30-40m across) is evident to S of the fence; no trace of the enclosure can be discerned to N of the fence.   Description

  In pasture, on top of a hill with excellent views of the surrounding undulating landscape. Not shown on any edition of the OS 6-inch maps. Raised circular area (6m NW-SE; NE-SW; H 0.6m) enclosed by a fosse (Wth 1.5-2m) with an external bank (Wth 2.4m; int. H 0.3-0.4m; ext. H 0.3m at NW, 0.7m at SW). Overall diam. (bank to bank): c. 12m The central mound is slightly domed in profile. An eroded portion of the mound at N reveals a makeup of large angular stones and gravelly earth. The fosse and external bank are rather poorly defined, but the external bank is enhanced by the natural fall of ground at SW−N. There is a low area or break (Wth 0.5m) in the bank at SSW. A straight NW−SE field wall clips the outer edge of the bank at N−NE and remnants of another field fence at SE merge with the bank at SE. Three thorn bushes growing on the central mound. • MA082-023 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In undulating, good pasture, located on a rise with a gentle SE-facing slope, with good views SE–SW. There is rising ground to NW–NE. This possible rath is shown on the 1838 and 1916 OS 6-inch maps as a circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m); on the 1916 edition an outer enclosing fosse/external bank curves around the E half and a field boundary respects the curve of the enclosure on the W half. It was levelled in the early 1980’s during land reclamation. Low surface undulations can still be discerned outlining a circular area (diam. c. 40-42m). The highest point in the interior is the NW quadrant and there is a slope down from there to S–SE. There is a rath (MA082-024----) 260m to ESE and another (MA081-037----) 145m to NNW. • MA082-024 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on a slight rise. Slightly raised circular (30m N–S;31m E–W) defined by a low bank (Wth 2-2.5m; int. H 0.2-0.3m; ext. H 0.7-0.8m) of earth and stone, and enclosed at S–WNW by a fosse (Wth 3m) and external bank (Wth 2.4m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.7m). Both banks appear to be largely earthen in construction, but incorporate stones in parts, with a scattering of stones, mostly field clearance, along the top. The outer bank has been levelled at E–S, but a slight surface undulation can still be discerned. The fosse, which is silted up, appears shallow and narrow, and is filled with field clearance debris in parts. A break (Wth 3m) in the inner bank at ESE may indicate the original entrance. The W half of the interior is at a slightly higher level that the E half. Interior is largely grassy but scattered with hawthorn bushes; hawthorn and blackthorn cover both enclosing banks. • MA082-025 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Located in gently undulating pasture, with good views. This possible rath is not indicated on the 1838 OS 6-inch map; it is shown on the 1916 edition as a penannular field/enclosure, open to E, with field boundaries radiating from it to SE, SW, NW and NE. It is also recorded in an aerial photograph (SMR file: GSI M 553 -2; Roll 214, pr. 7). The enclosure and all adjacent field boundaries were levelled during land reclamation. The outline of a sub-circular, slightly raised area (diam. 55.5m) enclosed by the shallow dip of an infilled fosse, and traces of a levelled outer bank can still be discerned. • MA092-018 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  In pasture, located on a NW–SE ridge. The ground shelves away steeply for 160m to SW to the shore of Mannin Lake. Slightly raised, broadly oval area (31.5m N–S; 35.6m E–W) defined by a partly levelled scarp (H 0.6m), outside which it is enclosed by a fosse (Wth 2.2m at SW) with remnants of an external bank (Wth 2.6m; int. H 0.6m; ext. H 0.7m, at SW). The central platform is relatively level and appears to have been built up on the W half to compensate for the natural fall of ground to NW and SW. The fosse is evident as a shallow depression. The external bank survives at S–NW as a low, dilapidated earth and stone bank; it is levelled at NNW–NE to a slight surface undulation; it is subsumed at ENE–SE into a field fence which preserves the curve of the rath and at SSE–S is levelled to a barely discernible surface rise.   Description

  Detached three-bay two-storey farmhouse, post-1920, on a rectangular plan with three-bay two-storey rear (south) elevation. Hipped slate roof with clay ridge tiles centred on paired rendered chimney stacks having corbelled stepped stringcourses below capping supporting terracotta pots, and cast-iron rainwater goods on timber eaves boards retaining cast-iron downpipes. Gritdashed roughcast walls bellcast over rendered plinth with gritdashed roughcast-panelled rendered piers to ends. Hipped segmental-headed central door opening with timber mullions on tiled step threshold supporting timber transom, and rendered surround with gritdashed roughcast-panelled pilasters centred on keystone framing replacement timber panelled door having sidelights below overlight. Square-headed window openings with concrete sills, and rendered surrounds with gritdashed roughcast-panelled pilasters supporting dentilated cornices on blind friezes framing two-over-two timber sash windows having exposed sash boxes. Set in landscaped grounds.
