Description
In pasture, on gentle N-facing slope. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 40m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Levelled roadway running NE-SW transects enclosure. On NW side of road is raised area (C c. 22m NE-SW), scarp most clearly defined to W; no visible surface trace of site to SE of roadway. Recorded by Bowman (1934, 357) as one of two levelled single-ramparted forts (CO030-147---) on Mr McCarthy's land; (diam. '39 yards and 34 yards'). Description
On W bank of realigned Owenbaun River, originally 150m further to E. Named 'Rath' on 1937 OS 6-inch map and shown as hachured scarp N->S, with second concentric scarp N->E. Site overgrown and used as dump for farmyard manure; area defined to N by stone field boundary, to E by drainage canal and to S by sunken farm trackway. Within site are a number of low earthen banks (H c. 0.6m; Wth c. 2m), partially overgrown and incomplete, which seem to be part of two E-W rectangular structures. According to local tradition, site of church and burial ground. Recorded by Bowman (1934, 357) as 'church site' in Mr McCarthy's land, 'in field called the graveyard. Fence levelled. Site c. 2ft higher than field level...circular. diam. 35yd. mainly grass covered mounds'. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Description
In pasture, atop natural rise at W side of new line of Owenbaun River. Depicted as hachured circular enclosure (diam. c. 50m) on 1842 OS 6-inch map. Natural scarp to S appears to defines area of site on S side; low rise (int. H 0.5m; ext. H 0.3m) to N may mark line of levelled bank. According to Bowman (1934, 357) one of two levelled single-ramparted forts (CO030-145---) on Mr McCarthy's land. Description
Road bridge (Wth 7.7m; long axis NNW-SSE) over River Blackwater. Random ashlar (local sandstone) construction with rock-faced finish. Five large segmental arches, cut and dressed limestone voussoirs, limestone string course. Bluntly pointed limestone cutwaters. Parapet wall on roadside of coursed ashlar limestone, with coping of flat limestone slabs. Plaque on W parapet reads "1858/Colthurst Bridge/Watrag/Surveyor/M. Forrest/Contractor". Description
Double-arch road bridge over Owenbaun River, built c. 1850, having limestone V-cutwaters to west elevation. Roughly dressed sandstone walls with rendered copings to the parapet walls. Roughly dressed sandstone voussoirs to round arches.
