• RO023-078001 Church
  Description

  On the S-facing slope of a slight NW-SE ridge. Traditionally thought to be one of three churches founded by St. Patrick in the Trí Tuatha (O'Flanagan 1931, 33). This is the medieval parish church of Kiltrustan where a functioning Roman Catholic church was situated in the early 19th century (1837 OS 6-inch map). Slight remnants of a structure (int. dims 16m E-W; 6.8m N-S) defined by the W gable (T 1.05m) with a robbed window, and the N end of the E wall survive. Fragments of the N (L 12m; T 1.7m) and S walls (L 5m) survive as foundations. It is within a rectangular graveyard (RO023-078002-) (dims 70m NE-SW; 55m NW-SE) defined by masonry walls. • RO023-080 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  On a gentle S-facing slope on a fairly level landscape. Circular grass and reed-covered area (diam. 33.2m E-W; 32.9m N-S) defined by the shallow remains of a reed-filled fosse (Wth 3.6-4.5m; D 0.1-0.2m).   Description

  Towards the top of the NE-facing slope of the NW-SE ridge of Mullaghcreigha Hill. Circular scrub-covered area (int. diam. 36.7m E-W; 34m N-S) defined by a grass-covered and overgrown stone spread (Wth 3.2-5.7m; int. H 0.2m at N to 1.3m at W; ext. H 0.6-0.9m) with intermittently visible facing-stones at E and W. There is an entrance (Wth 3m) at ENE and a disused drystone-built well (dims 1.9m E-W; 0.9m N-S; D 0.1m) is about 2m below ground level on the line of the perimeter at N which is approached by steps from the E. • RO023-118001 Ecclesiastical enclosure
  Description

  On a shelf at the top of the SW-facing slope of Mullaghcreigha Hill. The church (RO023-118----) is towards the S end of a D-shaped enclosure (max. dims c. 100m N-S; c. 55m E-W) defined by a bank and outer fosse that is only evident as a feature on a Lidar image (Davis 2015, 174, No. 66:2). There is no evidence of burial, and the church is skirted by a NE-SW farm lane at W approaching from the SW that turns SE just N of the structure. • RO023-119 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Marked as a circular embanked enclosure (ext. diam. c. 25m) only on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map, and situated just off the crest of the NE-facing slope of Mullaghcreigha Hill. Described as a circular area defined by a defaced earthen bank (Gannon 1972), it is not now visible at ground level in pasture. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
