  Marked only on the 1928 ed. of the OS 6-inch map as a D-shaped feature (dims. c. 35m NE-SW; c. 20m NW-SE) truncated by a field bank and townland boundary with Mullymucks at NW and by a NW-SE field bank at SW.   Description

  On a NE-facing slope. D-shaped grass-covered area (dims 28m NW-SE; c. 15m NE-SW) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 2.4-2.9m; int. H 0.2m; ext. H 0.25-0.35m) NW-SE. There is no visible fosse or entrance, but a quarry was dug inside the perimeter at E. The monument is truncated by a WNW-ESE field wall at S and nothing survives visibly S of this feature. A trial trench (99E0561) just N of the perimeter (Crumlish 2000a), and monitoring (00E0279) of roadworks (Joubert 2002) just to the W did not reveal any outer features.   Description

  Depicted as a large embanked enclosure (dims c. 90m NE-SW; c. 70m NW-SE) on the 1837 and 1929 eds of the OS 6-inch map, and situated towards the top of a NE-facing slope. Described as a very large area defined by an earthen bank and fosse (Gannon 1972).   On a gentle N-facing slope. Oval grass-covered area (dims 48.6m E-W; 37.7m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 4.6-6.3m; int. H 0.1-0.5m; ext. H 0.4-1.4m) which is reduced to a scarp (H 0.55m) NW-ENE. There is an outer rounded fosse (Wth of top 4.8-6.6m; Wth of base 1.7-2m; D 0.2-0.5m) which is visible S-N-ENE, and a slight outer bank (Wth 3.7m; ext. H 0.1-0.25m) which survives WNW-NNW (max. ext. diam. 52.6m N-S). There is no identifiable original entrance. Rath (RO036-077----) is c. 200m to the SSE.   Description

  On a gentle SW-facing slope of a low hill. Subcircular grass-covered area (dims 51.7m E-W; 45.8m N-S) defined by an earthen bank (Wth 3.6-5.3m; int. H 0.4-0.5m; ext. H 0.7-1.8m) and a rounded fosse (Wth of top 6.5m; Wth of base 1.8-3.6m; D 0.3-0.45m). The bank is reduced to a scarp SE-WSW, and there is a causeway (Wth 2.5m; H 0.15m) at S (max. ext. diam. 64.7m E-W). Rath (RO035-091----) is c. 200m to the NNW.   At the N end of a low NW-SE ridge. Subrectangular grass-covered cairn (dims of base 4.8m N-S; 4.6m E-W; H 0.4m at E to 0.8m at N) which may be a stepped calvary, with a cross-base (dims 0.5m x 0.47m; H 0.22m) and fragment of a window mullion (RO036-038002-) (L 0.4m) nearby. It is known to have been the site of a cross (OS Name Book), and the cross-head (RO040-004004-) at Derrane Abbey (RO040-004001-) c. 130m to the SE may be from here.   Description

  In the front garden of Durham Lodge, although thought locally to have come from Hollywell House c. 700m to the N and to relate to a family called Sandys, who were in Ireland since the late 17th century. Limestone slab (Wth 0.82m; H 0.8m; T 0.13m) with a raised crest of the arms of France and (probably) England, surrounded by the motto of the Order of the Garter. There is a raised 'R' in the top right corner, but the top left corner has been removed, but may have had an 'E' for Elizabeth, indicating a late 16th century date. • RO040-004001 Religious house - Augustinian, of Arrouaise nuns
  Description

  An abbey of Augustinian Arroasian nuns was established here from Roscommon (RO039-043006-) probably by Turlough O'Conor before his death in 1156. By 1223 it was a cell of the Arroasian nuns at Kilcreevanty (GA029-096001-), but it may have been defunct shortly afterwards (Gwynn and Hadcock, 1970, 163, 316; Hall 2003, 79, 152). It is listed as Doryn in the ecclesiastical taxation of Elphin in 1306 (Cal. doc. Ire., vol. 5, 223), and is situated on a broad, low NW-SE ridge. A rectangular structure (dims c. 30m NW-SE; c. 10m NE-SW) described in gothic lettering as ‘Derrane Abbey’ is marked on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map and is probably the abbey church, which once had a large decorated window (Weld 1832, 458-9). The Roman Catholic church of Our Lady of Lourdes was built on its site in 1857 (Beirne 2000, 263) but is aligned NE-SW. A fragment of a wall (L 11.7m NE-SW; T 0.9-1m; H 0.6-0.8m) with a taller section (H 2.3m) at its SW end survives inside the NW wall of the rectangular graveyard (RO040-004002-) (dims 53m NWE-SE; 40m NE-SW) defined by masonry walls, which is just to the SE of the present church. This might be the original wall of the graveyard. There is the head of a maltese cross (RO040-004004-) (Wth 0.68m; H 0.58m; T 0.1m) and about ten architectural fragments in the graveyard. The cross-head has an inscription commemorating Hugh and Margaret Hanly and their daughter-in-law Ann with the dates 1677 and 1692. It is set on a hexagonal shaft with the symbols of the passion (total H 1.3m) (Siggins 1994a). It might once have been erected c. 130m to the NW (RO036-038----) where there is the base of a cross (RO036-039004-). Archaeological testing (08E0392) for an extension to the present church recorded no material related to the earlier foundation (Byrne 2008b; 2011b).   Description

  The rectangular graveyard (dims 53m NWE-SE; 40m NE-SW) of Derrane Abbey (RO040-0004001-) defined by masonry walls is now extended to the SE (dims c. 55m NW-SE; c. 55m NE-SW). The older part has the head of a cross (RO040-040004-) and about ten architectural fragments (RO036-039004-). A Roman Catholic church is now outside the old graveyard at NW on the probable site of the abbey church. A fragment of a wall (L 11.7m NE-SW; T 0.9-1m; H 0.6-0.8m) with a taller section (H 2.3m) at its SW end survives inside the NW wall of the graveyard and might be the original wall of the abbey graveyard.
