  Description

  This bridge was recorded by the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage as follows: 'Multiple-arch road bridge, built c.1700, over River Clare and flood plain, approximately 200 metres long, with larger segmental arch inserted in mid-nineteenth century. Rubble limestone walls of small stones, and having small round-headed arches. Larger arch of built of squared rubble. End arches of seven middle arches in flood plain have triangular-profile piers to one side. Medieval tower house [GA016-053001-] and earthworks [GA016-053002-] to west of bridge, suggesting that core of bridge might be medieval' (http://www.buildingsofireland.ie/niah accessed 3 April 2017). • GA029-096001 Religious house - Benedictine nuns
  Description

  In grassland overlooking bogland and the River Clare to W. According to Gwynn and Hadcock (1970, 318-19), this nunnery was founded by 'Cathal Crovderg O'Conor' as a Benedictine monastery c. 1200, becoming Arroasian (Augustinian canons) sometime before 1223, and subsequently the mother house for that order in Connaught. An inquisition taken in 1543 records that it possessed 'a church and belfry, a dormitory, hall, three chambers, kitchen, etc., with precincts of 2 acres' (ibid.). What survives are the faint outlines of a church, cloister and domestic range, now contained within a roughly rectangular graveyard (GA029-096002-). The church (E-W; L c. 20.75m), surviving largely as foundations, comprises a nave (L c. 15.4m, Wth 7m) and slightly narrower chancel (L 5.35m, Wth 5.8m). The only surviving architectural feature is a piscina in S wall of the chancel but OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 13, also 14-16) mention a large window 'in the round style' in this area. Adjoining the church on S side is a rectangular area (N-S 28.3m, E-W 14.3m), probably the remains of a cloister. This is defined along N and S sides by a number of substantial wall-fragments. These contain two robbed opes, probably doorways, one in NW corner, and the other centrally placed in S wall, to E of which is a robbed window. Extending S from SE and SW corners of the cloister are two rectangular platforms (both N-S c. 7m), possibly the foundations of part of the domestic range. A number cut-stone fragments also survive, including some of 13th-C date. A field system (GA029-096003-) and a holy tree (GA029-061----) are associated.   Description

  Surrounding Kilcreevanty Nunnery (GA029-096001-) and graveyard (GA029-096002-), principally to W and N. An extensive series of earthen banks, many forming irregular fields, covers an area c. 300m N-S by c. 250m E-W. Faint traces of cultivation ridges are visible within a number of them, and the foundations of at least two rectangular houses (GA029-096004- and GA029-096005-) are visible immediately to SW and W of the graveyard. Though some of the boundaries form a gentle arc curving from W to N around the graveyard, no definite trace of a formal ecclesiastical enclosure appears to be present.   Description

  On W end of an E-W running ridge, 140m SSE of another ringfort (GA029-100----). Very poorly preserved oval rath (E-W c. 31m, N-S c. 24m) defined by a bank with possible traces of a second. A field boundary, running N-S, cuts the monument at NNW and SSW, and all that is visible to E of it is a wide gravelly scar marking the line of one, possibly two levelled banks. To W of it, the arc of a bank still survives, curving from SSW through W to NNW, outside of which another surface scar again suggests the former presence of an outer bank.
