• TN027-071001 Church
  Description

  Situated on a steep NE-facing slope. Referred to in the Civil Survey 1654-6 as 'a standing church ' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 237). A poorly preserved rectangular church (dims. c. 7.4m N-S; 18.6m E-W) in the NW sector of a graveyard (TN027-071002). The W end consists of rubble wall with concrete facing internally. Only the foundations survive along the N and E. The church was built into the hillslope, dropping down on the N side. According to the OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 191) there was a doorway (H 1.8m; Wth c. 1m) in the W end of the N wall (T c. 1m), constructed of 'chiselled limestone'.   Description

  Situated on a steep NE-facing slope. Referred to in the Civil Survey 1654-6 as 'a standing church ' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 237).   Description

  Situated on top of a hill. A raised area (39.6m N-S; 43m NE-SW) defined by an earth and stone bank (Wth 5m; int. H 0.5m; ext. H 4.43m); a deep, steep-sided, U-shaped fosse (Wth 3.5m; D 2.27m) and a substantial outer bank (Wth 3.8m; ext. H 1.54m). Possible causewayed entrance (Wth 4m) in the SE quadrant.   Description

  Situated on the SE-facing slope of a hill in hilly pastureland. Depicted as a circular enclosure bisected by a NE-SW field boundary on both the 1st and current editions of the OS 6-inch map. A roughly circular area (diam. 32.4m N-S; 28m E-W) defined by traces of a very slight raised curving bank (Wth 3m), a fosse (Wth 5.4m), a second bank (Wth 4.5m) and fosse (Wth 3.6m).   Description

  Located at the base of a SE-facing slope in undulating terrain. A stream running roughly E-W was formerly adjacent to the S half of the site. Depicted as a circular enclosure on the 1st ed. (1843) OS 6-inch map but not indicated on the 1904 ed. Adjacent field boundaries have changed between the two map eds. and presumably the site was levelled when the field boundaries were altered. The site is transected by an E-W field boundary with no visible trace of the site S of this. The N half is discernible as a raised area (diam. c. 40m) surrounded by a fosse (Wth c. 4m; D 0.3m).   Description

  Located in pastureland on level ground at the base of a W-facing slope with a river to the W. A circular area (diam. 46m N-S) defined by a bank (Wth 4.5m; int. H 0.53m; ext. H 0.11m) and outer fosse (Wth 4.1m; D 0.46m). The bank is particularly clear in the NE quadrant. The W half of the site is hidden by mounds of debris from field boundary clearance.   Situated on the gradual NE slope of a hill, in pasture. Depicted on the 1st (1843) ed. OS 6-inch map as an irregular enclosure which appears to be truncated by a NW-SE field boundary along the SW quadrant and as a circular enclosure on the 1904 ed. with a townland boundary along the SW quadrant. Although levelled a curving field boundary indicates the former presence of the site and there are slight traces of a fosse.   Situated on the steep N-facing slope of a hill, in pasture. Depicted as a roughly circular enclosure on the 1st ed. (1843) OS 6-inch map, with an E-W field boundary abutting the NE quadrant. On the 1904 ed. a field boundary extends roughly E-W across the N bank of the site. The site has been levelled with no visible trace at ground level. The N field boundary was also cleared.   Situated on the N-facing slope of a fairly steep hill in reclaimed pastureland. Marked as a circular enclosure on the 1st ed. (1843) OS 6-inch map and as a circular enclosure extended by a bank/scarp to the E on the 1904 ed. Although levelled, the site is discernible as a slight circular rise (diam. c. 39m E-W) with a concave interior.   Description

  Situated on the NNW-facing slope of a fairly steep hill. A circular enclosure (diam. c. 21m N-S; 21.8m E-W) defined by a bank (Wth 3m; H 1m) which survives best upslope to the S and is destroyed at N. No visible trace of a fosse or entrance feature.   Description

  Situated on the NE-facing slope of a hill in pastureland on a slight break in slope, adjacent to a coniferous forest. Indicated as a circular enclosure on the 1904 ed. OS 6-inch map. The site has been levelled but is faintly visible as a roughly circular platform (diam. 26m N-S; 25.3m E-W) defined by a low scarp (H c. 0.1m) and an external fosse (Wth c. 3.5m; D c. 0.12m). • TN027-136 Ringfort - rath
  Description

  Situated on the N-facing slope of the steep Ballincurra Hill in forest. A forest roadway, constructed c. 12 years ago, destroyed most of the site. Only the SW quadrant of this trivallate site survives (diam. 20.8m N-S). The enclosing elements consist of an inner bank (Wth 1.9m; int. H 1.24m; ext. H 1.34m), a fosse (Wth 2m; D 1.96m), a middle bank (Wth 2m; ext. H 1.23m), a fosse (Wth 1.4m; D 1.52m), and an outer bank (Wth 1.4m; ext. H 0.76m) and external fosse (Wth 1.4m; D 1.06m). According to local information the bank was much higher downslope to the NE. There is a dramatic drop in ground level immediately N of the site.
